Smart Home for Renters: A No-Drill, No-Rewiring Setup Guide

You can build a useful smart home in a rental without drilling holes or touching the wiring. This guide covers plug-in and stick-on gear that leaves with you when you move: smart plugs, bulbs, retrofit locks that keep your key, battery doorbells and cameras, adhesive sensors, blind and curtain motors, and mesh Wi-Fi. Most picks are products we already cover elsewhere on the site, plus one new lock pick. Specs come from the makers and current Amazon listings, checked October 23, 2026.

Quick picks

Before you buy: check your lease and talk to your landlord

Renter-friendly does not mean anything goes. A few minutes with your lease can save your deposit.

What to skip unless the landlord agrees

In-wall smart switches and dimmers, smart thermostats and hardwired doorbells all involve the building's wiring. They are great upgrades for owners (see our smart switch guide and thermostat guide), but in a rental they usually need the landlord's OK and often a licensed electrician. Use smart plugs and smart bulbs instead to get most of the same automations.

How we chose

We looked for gear that installs without drilling or rewiring, or with a no-drill option, and that leaves no permanent change when you take it down. Most picks already appear in our other guides; we added one retrofit lock that fills a gap. Every linked product was checked on Amazon in the US on October 23, 2026, as sold by Amazon or the brand's own store. Specs and compatibility come from the makers and current listings. We have not tested these products ourselves.

Mesh Wi-Fi with a Thread border router: eero 6+

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my landlord's permission for smart home devices?

For anything that plugs in, screws into a lamp or sits on a shelf, usually not. For anything that changes the building, such as drilling, replacing a lock, rewiring a switch or swapping a thermostat, read your lease and ask in writing first. Some leases also limit cameras or devices on shared doors and hallways. When in doubt, ask, and keep the reply.

Can I put a smart lock on an apartment door?

Often, if you choose a retrofit lock that fits over the inside of your existing deadbolt and keeps your current key. That leaves the outside of the door and the landlord's key unchanged. Some leases still forbid any change to the lock, and some buildings need access for emergencies, so check your lease and keep your original thumbturn to put back when you move out.

Is it legal to put a video doorbell or camera on a rental?

It depends on where you live and on your lease. Recording audio has stricter rules than video in many places. Point cameras at your own door or space, not into neighbors' units or shared areas, unless the landlord and local law allow it. If the doorbell would be mounted outside on the building, ask the landlord first.

Will adhesive sensors damage the paint?

They can, especially on fresh or cheap paint. Removable mounting strips designed to come off cleanly help, and so does pulling them off slowly. Test in a hidden spot first if you are worried about your deposit.

Do I need a hub for a renter-friendly smart home?

Not always. Wi-Fi plugs and bulbs work with just your router. Thread and Matter sensors and locks need a Thread border router with a Matter controller, which you may already own as a recent Apple TV, HomePod mini, compatible Echo, Nest hub or an eero 6+ router. SwitchBot devices use a SwitchBot hub to reach Matter.

What should I take with me when I move out?

Everything you added: plugs, bulbs, retrofit lock, sensors, motors and your router. Reinstall the original thumbturn, bulbs and any hardware you removed, factory-reset devices before you leave or give them away, and remove any door codes you shared.
