Best Matter and Thread Sensors (2026)
Battery-powered sensors are what make a smart home feel automatic: lights that turn on when you walk in, an alert when a door opens, a warning when water reaches the floor. This guide covers five Matter sensors for motion, doors and windows, leaks, and temperature and humidity, and what you need to run them.

Quick picks
- Best motion sensor: Eve Motion (Matter)
- Best contact sensor: Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2
- Best small contact sensor for Eve and Apple users: Eve Door & Window (Matter)
- Best temperature and humidity sensor: Aqara Climate Sensor W100
- Best leak sensor kit: Third Reality Smart Water Leak Sensor KM1 (Matter over Wi-Fi)
What you need first
Four of these five sensors use Matter over Thread. That means you need a hub that is both a Thread border router and a Matter controller for your platform, such as a HomePod mini, an Echo (4th gen) or Echo Hub, a Nest Hub (2nd gen), or a SmartThings hub. If you don't have one yet, start with our Thread border router and Matter hub guide, or read Matter vs. Thread explained. The leak kit uses Matter over Wi-Fi instead and needs a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network plus a Matter controller.
Support for each sensor type differs by platform and can change with app updates. Before you buy, check that your platform supports the type of sensor you want and what it can do with it, such as notifications or automations.
How we chose
Each pick uses Matter and was sold on Amazon in the US at the time of writing. Specs, battery types and hub requirements come from the makers' product pages and the official listings. We have not tested these sensors ourselves. We covered the four sensor types most people start with, and favored sensors with replaceable batteries and local automations.
Comparison at a glance
| Product | Sensor type | Connection | Power |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eve Motion (Matter) | Motion and light | Matter over Thread | 2 AAA batteries |
| Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2 | Contact (open/closed) | Matter over Thread | CR123A battery |
| Eve Door & Window (Matter) | Contact (open/closed) | Matter over Thread | ½ AA (ER14250) battery |
| Aqara Climate Sensor W100 | Temperature and humidity, with display and 3 buttons | Matter over Thread, or Zigbee with an Aqara hub | 2 CR2450 batteries |
| Third Reality KM1 | Water leak, 3 sensors and a controller | Matter over Wi-Fi (controller) | Controller: USB-C power; sensors: 2 AAA each |
Best motion sensor: Eve Motion (Matter)
Eve Motion detects motion and light level, so you can turn on lights only when a room is dark. Eve lists a 120-degree field of view and up to 9 meters (about 30 feet) of range, and IPX3 water resistance for covered outdoor spots. Eve says there is no Eve cloud or account, and that it communicates locally.
- Works with: Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings through a hub with Thread and Matter.
- Power: two replaceable AAA batteries.
- Consider: the Amazon listing we link is a 3-pack; the Eve app's extra history and settings are for iPhone and iPad.

Best contact sensor: Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2
The P2 tells you whether a door, window or drawer is open or closed and can trigger automations, like turning off a thermostat when a window opens. Aqara says it connects directly to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings over Matter and runs automations locally.
- Works with: Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings through a hub with Thread and Matter.
- Power: one CR123A battery; Aqara says battery life varies with the border router and apps the sensor is connected to.
- Consider: the magnet must sit close to the main unit; Aqara's listing gives a maximum gap of 22 mm.

Best small contact sensor for Eve and Apple users: Eve Door & Window (Matter)
Eve's contact sensor shows the open or closed state of a door or window and can trigger other devices. Like Eve Motion, it works across platforms with no Eve account, and iPhone users get time and duration history in the Eve app.
- Works with: Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings through a hub with Thread and Matter.
- Power: one replaceable ½ AA (ER14250 3.6V) battery, which is less common than AAA or CR123A.
- Consider: it's a good match if you already use other Eve devices.

Best temperature and humidity sensor: Aqara Climate Sensor W100
The W100 shows temperature and humidity on a 3.4-inch display and adds three programmable buttons for scenes. Aqara lists accuracy of ±0.2°C for temperature and ±2% RH for humidity. It ships in Thread mode for Matter and can switch to Zigbee with an Aqara hub for Aqara-only features.
- Works with: Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, Home Assistant and Homey, according to Aqara.
- Power: two CR2450 coin cells; Aqara estimates up to 2.3 years in Thread mode.
- Consider: the second-screen display and HVAC remote control only work in Zigbee mode with an Aqara hub, not over Matter.

Best leak sensor kit: Third Reality Smart Water Leak Sensor KM1
This kit pairs a plug-in controller with three battery-powered water sensors for under sinks, behind washers and near water heaters. When a sensor gets wet, the controller sounds a 100 dB alarm, and your platform can send a phone alert. Third Reality says the controller supports up to ten sensors.
- Works with: Third Reality says it has been tested with Apple Home, Alexa, Home Assistant and Homey.
- Power: the controller uses USB-C power; each sensor uses two AAA batteries, not included.
- Consider: it uses Matter over Wi-Fi, not Thread, and needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and a Matter controller. Google Home isn't on Third Reality's tested list. The alarm is on the controller, not the sensors, so place the controller where you can hear it.

Frequently asked questions
Do Matter over Thread sensors need a hub?
Yes. A Thread sensor needs a Thread border router plus a Matter controller for your platform, and many hubs do both: for example a HomePod mini or recent Apple TV 4K for Apple Home, an Echo (4th gen) or Echo Hub for Alexa, a Nest Hub (2nd gen) or Nest Wifi Pro for Google Home, or a SmartThings hub. Check the maker's current list of supported hubs before you buy.
What is the difference between Matter over Thread and Matter over Wi-Fi?
Both use Matter, so they can be added to Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and other platforms that support the device type. Thread is a low-power mesh network that suits small battery sensors and needs a Thread border router. Matter over Wi-Fi devices join your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network directly. The Third Reality leak kit on this page uses Matter over Wi-Fi through a plug-in controller.
Can one Matter sensor work with Apple Home and Alexa at the same time?
Matter supports multi-admin, which lets you share a device with more than one platform from the first platform's app. Support for each sensor type varies by platform, so a sensor may show up with fewer features in one app than another. Check that your platform supports the sensor type you need, such as contact, motion, leak or temperature.
Do Matter sensors work without the internet?
Matter is designed to work over your local network, and Eve and Aqara say automations for their Thread sensors run locally. Remote alerts on your phone while you are away still need your hub and an internet connection, so a local siren, like the one on the Third Reality leak controller, is useful for leaks.
Is there a Matter over Thread water leak sensor on Amazon?
We did not find one we could recommend on Amazon at the time of writing. IKEA sells the KLIPPBOK water leak sensor, which IKEA says uses Matter over Thread, through its own stores and website. Eve Water Guard uses Thread, but Eve lists it for Apple Home (HomeKit) rather than Matter.
Can a smart sensor replace a security system or smoke alarm?
No. Contact and motion sensors can send alerts and trigger automations, but they are not a monitored alarm system, and a leak or temperature sensor is not a substitute for smoke and CO alarms. Follow the maker's instructions for placement and battery replacement.
