Best Smart Locks with Matter for 2026

A Matter smart lock lets you add one lock to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings without being tied to a single platform. The catch is that "Matter" alone does not tell you whether you need a Thread border router, whether Apple home keys work, or whether the lock will fit your door. This guide covers those questions and four verified picks.

Quick picks

How we chose

Each pick is a lock whose maker lists Matter support, and each is currently sold on Amazon in the US. Specifications come from the makers' product pages, manuals and announcements. We have not tested these locks ourselves, and we chose them to cover different platforms, installation styles and connection types.

Matter over Thread vs. Matter over Wi-Fi

Matter is the common language; Thread and Wi-Fi are the networks it runs on. Most Matter locks use Thread, a low-power mesh network that helps battery life. A Thread lock needs a Thread border router nearby, such as a recent Apple TV or HomePod, a Google Nest hub or Google TV Streamer, or a compatible Echo device. Matter over Wi-Fi connects to your router directly but generally draws more power. Some locks, including the Kwikset and Schlage below, also have Wi-Fi for their own apps and use Thread for Matter. Read Matter vs. Thread explained for the background.

Apple home keys and Aliro

Apple home keys put a digital key in Apple Wallet so you can tap an iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock; some locks also support hands-free unlock. It is a separate feature from Matter, so check that the maker lists it for your exact model. Aliro is a newer Connectivity Standards Alliance standard intended to bring similar digital keys to more phone platforms. Schlage says the Sense Pro is Aliro compatible and, in June 2026, said it expected Aliro keys in Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet once certified. Treat Aliro as an emerging feature and confirm current support before buying for it.

Schlage Sense Pro: best for hands-free Apple entry

Schlage's first Matter-over-Thread lock adds Schlage Converge, which uses Ultra Wideband to unlock as you reach the door with a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch carrying an Apple home key. It also has a keypad, tap to unlock, built-in Wi-Fi for remote control in the Schlage Home app, and support for up to 250 access codes, according to Schlage's Amazon listing.

Kwikset Halo Select Plus: best Wi-Fi plus Matter option

Kwikset builds both Wi-Fi and Matter into the Halo Select Plus. Wi-Fi gives remote control in the Kwikset app with no hub; Kwikset says you can instead enable Matter via Thread to add it to other platforms, and that available features depend on the connection you choose.

Yale Smart Lock with Matter: best for Google Home

Yale designed this keypad deadbolt for Google Home, and with Matter over Thread built in it can also join other Matter platforms. Remote access needs a Matter hub with a Thread border router; Yale names the Google TV Streamer (4K), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max and Nest Wifi Pro.

Aqara Smart Lock U200: best retrofit

The U200 replaces only the interior thumb-turn side, so the outside of your door keeps its existing lock and key. Aqara says it works with Euro mortise locks and US single-cylinder deadbolts with a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset. It uses Matter over Thread and supports Apple home keys with an Apple home hub that acts as a Thread border router.

Frequently asked questions

Do Matter smart locks need a hub?

You need a Matter controller, such as a compatible Apple home hub, Google Nest hub or streamer, or Echo device. Locks that use Matter over Thread also need a Thread border router, which many of those devices include. Locks with their own Wi-Fi, such as the Kwikset Halo Select Plus, can work through the maker's app with no hub.

Is Thread or Wi-Fi better for a smart lock?

Thread is designed for low-power devices, so makers such as Yale and Schlage cite longer battery life and local control. Wi-Fi needs no border router but typically uses more power. Several locks include both: Wi-Fi for the maker's app and Thread for Matter.

What is Aliro?

Aliro is a Connectivity Standards Alliance standard for phone-based digital door keys across phone platforms. Schlage says the Sense Pro is Aliro compatible and expected Aliro keys in Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet once certified. Check the maker's current status before relying on it.

Which of these locks support Apple home keys?

Schlage, Kwikset and Aqara list Apple home key support for the Sense Pro, Halo Select Plus and U200. Home keys need an Apple home hub; Schlage and Aqara specify one that supports Thread. The Yale Smart Lock with Matter is designed for Google Home and does not list home keys.

Will a smart lock fit my door?

Check your door thickness, backset (usually 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches) and bore size against the maker's specifications. Full deadbolt replacements such as the Yale and Kwikset swap the whole lock; a retrofit like the Aqara U200 replaces only the interior side.

Do smart locks still have a physical key?

All four picks here keep a key option: the Yale, Kwikset and Schlage include keyed deadbolts, and the Aqara U200 keeps your existing exterior cylinder and key.
