Best Matter Smart Plugs: Wi-Fi, Thread and Outdoor Picks
Matter lets one smart plug work with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings instead of locking you into a single app. The catch is that Matter plugs come in two networking flavors, Wi-Fi and Thread, and they have different hub requirements. This guide picks four widely available Matter plugs for different situations and explains what else you need before buying.

Not sure whether you need Wi-Fi or Thread? If you do not already own a Thread border router, a Wi-Fi model is usually the simpler start. If you already have one, or plan to add Thread sensors and locks, a Thread plug is worth considering. Our Matter vs. Thread explainer covers the difference in detail.
How we chose
This is a research-based shortlist, not a hands-on test. We have not bench-tested these plugs, measured their accuracy or run them for months in our own homes. Instead, we:
- limited the list to Matter-certified plugs from established brands that were listed on Amazon.com when we checked in October 2026;
- took electrical ratings, wireless details and platform support from each manufacturer's own product page or datasheet;
- matched each plug to a clear use case rather than ranking them by a single score;
- left out prices, because they change frequently.
We did not invent ratings or summarize customer reviews. Always confirm the exact model, rating and compatibility on the listing and the manufacturer's site before you buy.
Before you buy: the hub question
Every Matter device needs a Matter controller, the device that links it to Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home or another platform. Often this is a smart speaker, smart display or similar home hub you may already own. Phone apps handle setup, but your chosen platform may require a home hub for automations and remote access.
Matter over Wi-Fi plugs (Tapo P125M, Kasa KP125M, Tapo P400M) join your existing 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and need no other radio hub. Matter over Thread plugs (Eve Energy) have no Wi-Fi and also need a Thread border router. One device can fill both roles: Google lists Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro and Google TV Streamer (4K) as Thread-capable hubs, and Amazon lists devices such as Echo Hub, Echo (4th Gen) and several eero routers as Thread border routers. Need a Thread border router?
If you choose Eve Energy and do not already own a Thread border router, you need one that matches your platform. For an Alexa home, Amazon's Echo Hub is a wall-mountable control panel that Amazon lists as having a built-in Thread border router; it can also act as the Matter controller. Apple Home and Google Home users should check their own hub lists instead.

Buying checklist
- Platform: confirm you have a Matter controller for Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings, and that it is on current software.
- Network type: Wi-Fi plugs need a working 2.4 GHz band; Thread plugs need a Thread border router.
- Load rating: compare the plug's amps, watts and motor rating with the appliance label, and leave a margin. Do not use smart plugs with portable space heaters.
- Size: check that the plug will not block the second socket or a nearby switch.
- Indoor or outdoor: only use a plug rated for outdoor use outside, such as an IP65 model.
- Energy monitoring: if you want power readings, confirm which app shows them on your platform.
- IPv6: Matter relies on IPv6 on your home network; if setup fails, check that your router has it enabled.

Frequently asked questions
Do Matter smart plugs need a hub?
Yes, in the sense that every Matter device needs a Matter controller from the platform you use, such as a compatible smart speaker, display or other home hub. Matter over Wi-Fi plugs connect to your router and need no extra radio hub. Matter over Thread plugs, such as Eve Energy, also need a Thread border router; many current smart speakers, displays and some Wi-Fi routers include one.
Is a Thread smart plug better than a Wi-Fi smart plug?
Not automatically. Thread plugs do not use your Wi-Fi network and, because they are mains-powered, can act as routers that strengthen a Thread mesh for battery sensors and locks. Wi-Fi plugs need no border router and are often simpler if you do not already own Thread hardware. Choose based on the hub you already have and how many smart-home devices you plan to add.
Can one Matter plug work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home at the same time?
Matter supports multi-admin, which lets you share one device with more than one compatible platform. After the first setup, you usually generate a new pairing code from the first platform's app to add the plug to a second one. Some features, such as energy readings, may only appear in certain apps.
Do Matter smart plugs work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
The Wi-Fi models in this guide are 2.4 GHz only, which is common for smart plugs. Make sure your router's 2.4 GHz band is turned on. If setup fails on a mesh or combined-band network, follow the plug maker's setup troubleshooting steps.
Will a Matter smart plug work if the internet goes down?
Matter is designed for local control, so control from apps and controllers on your home network can keep working during an internet outage, as TP-Link and Eve both describe. Remote control from outside the home and some cloud features still need an internet connection.
Does energy monitoring show up in Apple Home?
Check before you buy. TP-Link's KP125M datasheet states that its energy monitoring is not supported in the Apple Home app; you would use the Kasa app instead. Eve says energy data for Eve Energy is available through the Eve app or the energy features of supported platforms.
