How we chose
Each pick is currently sold on Amazon in the US, and its Thread, Matter and connectivity details come from the maker's product pages, support articles or official listings. We have not tested these devices ourselves. We chose one hub per major ecosystem, favoring always-on devices with an Ethernet port or a fixed spot in the home, because a border router works best when it stays powered and connected.
Matter controller vs. Thread border router
A Matter controller is what adds a Matter device to your smart home app and sends it commands. A Thread border router is a bridge between a Thread mesh network and your Wi-Fi or Ethernet network. Wi-Fi Matter devices only need a controller. Matter-over-Thread devices need both, which is why most hubs on this page combine the two. Our Matter vs. Thread explainer covers the basics in more detail.
Check what you already own
Before buying anything, check whether a device in your home already acts as a Thread border router. These lists come from each maker's support pages at the time of writing and can change with updates.
- Apple Home: Apple lists HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation), Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-enabled home hubs. Apple's specs for the new Apple TV 4K (4th generation) also list Thread. iPhones can pair some Thread accessories but are not home hubs.
- Google Home: Google lists the Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, Google TV Streamer (4K) and Google Home Speaker as Matter hubs with Thread. Nest Audio, Nest Mini and the first-gen Nest Hub work as Matter hubs for Wi-Fi devices only.
- Amazon Alexa: Amazon lists the Echo (4th Gen) and newer devices including the Echo Hub, Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen), Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen), Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen), Echo Plus (2nd Gen) and recent Echo Studio and Echo Dot Max models as Thread border routers.
- SmartThings: The Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 includes a Thread border router, according to SmartThings. Earlier SmartThings hubs, the SmartThings Station and some Samsung TVs and appliances are also reported to work as Thread border routers; check Samsung's support pages for your model.
- Aqara: Aqara lists the Hub M3 as a Thread border router and Matter controller. Older Aqara hubs such as the M2 are Zigbee hubs that can bridge Aqara devices to Matter but are not Thread border routers.
- eero: eero lists Thread support on eero 7, Pro 7, Max 7, Outdoor 7, PoE 7, Pro 6E, Pro 6, 6+, 6, PoE 6, eero Pro and Beacon. eero says the first-generation eero and the eero 6 Extender do not support Thread. See our eero vs. TP-Link Deco comparison.
Using more than one border router
It is normal to have several border routers, and extras can make a Thread network more reliable if one goes offline. Newer Thread versions are designed to let border routers from different brands join one network and share credentials. In practice, ecosystems still sometimes create separate Thread networks, so a lock added in one app may not use a border router from another brand. If you are starting fresh, pick one main ecosystem and add a second border router from the same brand on another floor if needed.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Thread border router?
A Thread border router connects a Thread mesh network of low-power devices, such as sensors, locks and some plugs, to your home Wi-Fi or Ethernet network so your phone, apps and voice assistant can reach them. Many smart speakers, displays, streaming boxes, routers and hubs include one.
Is a Matter controller the same as a Thread border router?
No. A Matter controller adds and controls Matter devices in an app such as Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings. A Thread border router gives Thread devices a path to your home network. Many hubs do both, but Matter devices that use Wi-Fi only need a controller, while Matter-over-Thread devices also need a border router.
Do I already own a Thread border router?
You might. Apple lists HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd gen) and recent Apple TV 4K models; Google lists the Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro and Google TV Streamer; Amazon lists several Echo speakers and displays, including the Echo (4th Gen) and Echo Hub; and eero lists most of its routers from the eero Pro and Beacon onward. Check the ecosystem section above and your maker's support page for your exact model.
Can I have more than one Thread border router?
Yes. Several border routers can add redundancy, so Thread devices stay reachable if one is offline. Newer Thread versions are designed to let border routers from different brands share one network, but ecosystems do not always merge their networks smoothly yet. If devices drop off, check for software updates and consider keeping most Thread devices in one ecosystem.
Do I need a hub for Wi-Fi Matter devices?
You need a Matter controller, but not a Thread border router. Most current smart speakers and displays from Apple, Google and Amazon can act as Matter controllers, and so can a phone for some setup tasks. Wi-Fi Matter devices connect to your router directly.
Will a Thread border router replace my Zigbee or Z-Wave hub?
Not by itself. Thread is a different radio from Zigbee and Z-Wave. Some hubs also include a Zigbee radio, such as the Amazon Echo Hub, Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 and Aqara Hub M3, but Aqara says the M3 works with Aqara Zigbee devices rather than all Zigbee products. None of our picks include Z-Wave.
