Best Smart Blinds and Shades with Matter and Thread (2026)
Smart blinds can open with the sunrise, close on hot afternoons and join a single "good night" scene. This guide covers motors that work with Matter, either natively over Thread or through a hub that bridges them to Matter, so they can show up in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings. It includes retrofit motors for blinds and curtains you already own, plus made-to-measure options. Specs come from the makers and current Amazon listings, checked October 23, 2026.

Quick picks
- Best retrofit for roller blinds (native Matter over Thread): Eve Motionblinds Upgrade Kit, large-tube version
- For smaller tubes, including many IKEA roller blinds: Eve Motionblinds Upgrade Kit, small-tube version
- Best for horizontal blinds with a tilt rod: SwitchBot Blind Tilt
- Best for curtains: SwitchBot Curtain 3 (U Rail)
- Matter bridge for SwitchBot motors: SwitchBot Hub 2
Thread-native vs. bridged: what "works with Matter" means here
There are two ways a blind motor gets into Matter, and the difference affects what else you need to buy.
- Native Matter over Thread (Eve Motionblinds, and SmartWings shades with the Matter motor): the motor joins your Thread network directly. You need a Thread border router that is also a Matter controller. Eve says no Eve cloud or bridge is involved. See our Thread border router guide and our Matter vs. Thread explainer.
- Bluetooth plus a Matter bridge (SwitchBot Blind Tilt and Curtain 3): the motors talk Bluetooth to a SwitchBot hub, and the hub exposes them to Matter. Without the hub, you control them in the SwitchBot app over Bluetooth. Some features may be limited over Matter; see each pick.
Retrofit or made-to-measure?
Retrofit motors are the cheaper, renter-friendly route: you keep your existing blinds or curtains and add a motor. They depend on fit, so measure first: tube diameter for roller blinds, tilt-rod size for horizontal blinds, and rod or rail type for curtains. Made-to-measure motorized shades are built to your window with the motor inside. They look tidier but take longer to arrive, and custom sizes are often non-returnable.
Made-to-measure options we mention without links:
- SmartWings: custom roller shades with a choice of motors, including a Matter-over-Thread motor (SW301) that needs a Thread border router. The Amazon listings we found were sold by third-party resellers and marked non-returnable, so we suggest ordering from SmartWings directly and confirming the Matter motor is selected.
- Eve Blinds Collection: Eve's made-to-measure roller blinds that use Eve Motionblinds motors, with light-filtering, blackout and insulating fabrics. Check Eve's site for availability in your country.
- Premium dealers (for example Lutron and Hunter Douglas): sold through their own sites and dealers and usually measured and installed for you. Smart-home support varies by product line and often runs through the brand's own hub, so confirm Matter support for the exact system before you buy.
How we chose
We looked for motors that reach Matter either natively or through the maker's own bridge, are sold on Amazon in the US by Amazon or the brand's own store, and come with clear fit requirements from the maker. Specs and compatibility come from the makers' sites and current Amazon listings. Products we could not confirm as currently sold on Amazon by Amazon or the brand are mentioned without links. We have not tested these products ourselves.

Best retrofit for roller blinds: Eve Motionblinds Upgrade Kit (Matter, large tubes)
Eve's kit turns an existing chain-operated roller blind into a Matter-over-Thread smart blind. The motor slides into the blind's tube and replaces the chain mechanism, and the included brackets mount to the wall or ceiling. Because it is Matter-certified, it works with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings through a Thread border router.
- Fit: tubes with an outside diameter of 38 to 51 mm (1.5 to 2 in), measured without fabric; blind at least 680 mm (26¾ in) wide.
- Power: built-in rechargeable battery with USB-C; Eve says up to one year per charge with typical use. A pull cord still works for manual control.
- Extras: in Apple Home, the Eve app adds Adaptive Shading based on the sun's position and schedules stored on the motor.
- Consider: Eve says this version does not fit IKEA or Hunter Douglas tubes. It needs a Thread border router with a Matter controller; it will not work over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth alone. Make sure you are buying the Matter edition.

For smaller tubes: Eve Motionblinds Upgrade Kit (Matter, small tubes)
This version uses the same Matter-over-Thread design as the large-tube kit, with a slimmer motor for narrower tubes. Eve recommends it for retrofitting IKEA roller blinds if your tube is in range.
- Fit: tubes with an outside diameter of 25 to 30 mm (1 to 1.2 in), measured without fabric; blind at least 570 mm (22 in) wide.
- Power: built-in rechargeable USB-C battery and a pull cord for manual control.
- Consider: Eve lists lower torque for this motor (0.5 Nm vs. 1.1 Nm for the large-tube kit), so it is meant for lighter, narrower blinds. It also needs a Thread border router with a Matter controller.

Best for horizontal blinds: SwitchBot Blind Tilt
Blind Tilt clips onto the tilt rod of horizontal blinds and turns the slats, so you can let light in or close for privacy without raising the blinds. It does not raise or lower them.
- Fit: horizontal blinds with a tilt rod; SwitchBot lists rod sizes of 6.2 to 10.2 mm and 12 mm. Not for vertical blinds, roller shades or roller blinds.
- Power: 2000mAh battery with a small solar panel included. A built-in light sensor can trigger tilting based on brightness.
- Matter: Bluetooth only on its own; it reaches Matter through a SwitchBot bridge. The Amazon listing names Hub 2, and SwitchBot's help center lists other Matter-enabled SwitchBot hubs as well.
- Consider: SwitchBot's listing says that in Apple Home it shows as fully open, closed down or closed up, without in-between angles; use the SwitchBot app for finer control. The Amazon page also notes a newer bundle exists, so check which version you are buying.

Best for curtains: SwitchBot Curtain 3 (U Rail)
Curtain 3 hangs on your existing track and pushes the curtain open or closed, with no tools needed. It is a good fit for renters who can't change their window hardware.
- Fit: this version is for U-shaped rails, and SwitchBot says it does not fit round rods. A Rod version is sold separately; SwitchBot says it won't work on extendable rods whose extendable section is under 5/8 in thick.
- Strength and noise: moves curtains up to 16 kg (36 lb) on U rails; SwitchBot says Silent Mode keeps it under 25 dB. A positioning magnet helps it stop in the right place.
- Matter: Bluetooth on its own; with Hub 2, SwitchBot says it supports Matter and appears in Apple Home.
- Consider: one unit moves one curtain panel, so curtains that open from the middle need two. The optional solar panel is sold separately.

Matter bridge for SwitchBot motors: SwitchBot Hub 2
Hub 2 connects SwitchBot's Bluetooth devices to Wi-Fi and exposes Blind Tilt and Curtain motors to Matter, which is how they show up in Apple Home and other Matter apps. It also works as an infrared remote, a thermometer and hygrometer, and a light sensor.
- Network: 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only.
- Consider: it is a Matter bridge, not a Thread border router, so it does not help Thread-native motors such as Eve. Skip it if you only buy Eve motors. SwitchBot also sells newer Matter-enabled hubs; check SwitchBot's current Matter hub list before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
Do smart blinds need a hub to work with Matter?
Usually, yes. Matter-over-Thread motors such as Eve Motionblinds need a Thread border router that is also a Matter controller, such as a recent Apple TV 4K or HomePod, a compatible Echo, a Nest Hub (2nd gen) or Nest Wifi Pro, or a SmartThings hub. SwitchBot's Blind Tilt and Curtain 3 use Bluetooth and reach Matter through a SwitchBot hub that acts as a Matter bridge, such as Hub 2.
What is the difference between a retrofit motor and a made-to-measure smart shade?
A retrofit motor upgrades blinds or curtains you already own: it slides into a roller blind tube, turns the tilt rod of horizontal blinds, or pushes curtains along a rod or rail. A made-to-measure shade is a new shade built to your window size with the motor already inside. Retrofits cost less and suit renters; made-to-measure shades look cleaner but take longer to arrive and are often non-returnable.
Will Eve Motionblinds fit my IKEA roller blind?
Eve says its large-tube kit does not fit IKEA or Hunter Douglas blinds because of their tube size. For IKEA blinds, Eve points to the separate small-tube kit, which fits tubes of 25 to 30 mm (1 to 1.2 in) outside diameter on blinds at least 570 mm (22 in) wide. Measure your tube without the fabric before you order.
Can SwitchBot Blind Tilt work with roller shades or vertical blinds?
No. SwitchBot says Blind Tilt is for horizontal blinds with a tilt rod; it is not for vertical blinds, roller shades or roller blinds. For a roller blind, look at a tube motor such as Eve Motionblinds instead.
How long do battery-powered blind motors last between charges?
It depends on how often they move and on the size of the blind. Eve says its motor's battery lasts up to one year with typical use and charges by USB-C. SwitchBot Blind Tilt includes a small solar panel to top up its battery. Check the maker's estimate for your setup.
Do I need two SwitchBot Curtain 3 motors?
Only if your curtains open from the middle. SwitchBot says one unit moves one curtain panel, so curtains that part in the center need two units.
