Best Video Doorbells Without a Subscription (2026)
A video doorbell shows you who is at the door, but many models put recorded clips behind a monthly plan. This guide covers four video doorbells that can save video locally on a memory card or built-in storage, with no subscription required for recording. We explain wired versus battery power and which existing chimes each one works with.

Quick picks
- Best battery doorbell with built-in storage: eufy Video Doorbell E340
- Best wired doorbell for 24/7 local recording: Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi
- Best value, battery or wired: Tapo D225
- Best for Apple Home: Aqara Smart Doorbell Camera G410
Local storage: what "no subscription" really means
Every doorbell here can record without a monthly plan, but where the video goes differs. The eufy E340 has 8GB of built-in storage. The Reolink and Tapo use a microSD card inside the doorbell. The Aqara puts its microSD slot in the indoor chime, so the recordings stay inside your home. Memory cards are not included with any of these doorbells. For the trade-offs between keeping video at home and paying for cloud backup, see our local vs. cloud storage guide.
Wired vs. battery
A wired doorbell runs from your existing doorbell transformer, so you never recharge it. Wired power also enables continuous 24/7 recording on the Reolink and on the Tapo when it is hardwired. A battery doorbell can go anywhere, but it usually records short motion clips to save power. Before buying a wired model, check that your transformer's voltage matches the maker's range. Our smart doorbell compatibility guide walks through wiring, transformers and chimes step by step. Always turn off power at the breaker before working on doorbell wiring, and call a licensed electrician if you need a new transformer.
Chime compatibility
If you want your existing indoor chime to keep ringing, check this before you buy. Most wired video doorbells support standard mechanical chimes (the ding-dong kind) and often do not support digital chimes that play melodies. Reolink and Tapo include plug-in chimes, so you still get an indoor ring even if your old chime cannot be used. The Aqara does not connect to a traditional chime at all and relies on its included chime.
How we chose
Each pick can record locally without a subscription and was sold on Amazon in the US at the time of writing. Specs, power options and chime support come from the makers' product pages and the official Amazon listings. We have not tested these doorbells ourselves. We left out doorbells that need a paid plan to save any recordings. For a broader look at cameras without monthly fees, see our security cameras without a subscription guide.

Best battery doorbell with built-in storage: eufy Video Doorbell E340
The E340 has two cameras: one faces visitors and one looks down at packages on the ground. It saves video to 8GB of built-in storage, so there is no memory card to buy, and eufy says no subscription is needed. You can add a eufy HomeBase to store more video away from the door.
- Power: removable battery, or wired at 16-24V. eufy says the battery stays installed in wired mode.
- Chime: eufy lists mechanical chimes, its HomeBase S280/S380 and MiniBase Chime, and Alexa or Google devices. Some older eufy Wi-Fi chimes are not compatible.
- Consider: it needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and doesn't support Apple Home. eufy's pre-record feature needs a constant 16-24V, 30VA transformer and a bypassed chime. Amazon shows a newer eufy model, so check which version you are buying.

Best wired doorbell for 24/7 local recording: Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi
Reolink's wired doorbell supports continuous, scheduled or motion recording to a microSD card, a Reolink NVR or Home Hub, or your own FTP or NAS server, with no mandatory fees. Reolink lists a 5MP sensor, a 180-degree diagonal view in a tall 4:3 frame, and dual-band Wi-Fi. A plug-in Reolink Chime is in the box.
- Power: hardwired only, 12-24V AC or 24V DC. A power adapter is included for homes without doorbell wiring.
- Chime: Reolink says you can wire it to your existing mechanical chime or use the included chime.
- Consider: no battery option. Reolink's spec sheet lists microSD cards up to 256GB, while the Amazon listing mentions up to 512GB, so stay within Reolink's figure to be safe. Reolink also sells a PoE version, so make sure the listing says WiFi.

Best value, battery or wired: Tapo D225
The Tapo D225 offers both power options in one doorbell: a built-in 10,000mAh battery that Tapo rates at up to 8 months per charge, or 8-24V hardwiring, which unlocks 24/7 continuous recording. It records to a microSD card up to 512GB. Tapo says person, vehicle and package detection is free, and Tapo Care cloud storage is optional.
- Chime: a plug-in Tapo chime is included, along with a jumper for homes with an existing chime. Check Tapo's install guide to see whether your old chime will still ring.
- Works with: Alexa and Google Assistant displays.
- Consider: it needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and doesn't support Apple Home. The memory card sits in the doorbell, so a stolen doorbell takes its recordings with it.

Best for Apple Home: Aqara Smart Doorbell Camera G410
The G410 supports HomeKit Secure Video, so Apple Home users can store encrypted clips in iCloud as part of an iCloud+ plan instead of paying for a separate doorbell plan. You can also record to a microSD card (up to 512GB) in the indoor chime. It works with Matter, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant, and the chime has a built-in Zigbee and Matter hub. It uses mmWave radar for presence detection.
- Power: AA batteries (included) or wired.
- Chime: Aqara says it does not connect to a traditional chime; the included 95 dB chime must stay within range of the doorbell.
- Consider: HomeKit Secure Video needs an iCloud+ plan and an Apple home hub. Aqara notes resolution is limited to 1600×1200 when connected to HomeKit. The Amazon listing shows a lower water-resistance level than our other picks, so a covered entry is a better fit. We link the gray version because the black one had no featured offer when we checked.

Frequently asked questions
Can a video doorbell record without a subscription?
Yes, if it stores clips locally. All four picks here can save video to a memory card or built-in storage without a monthly plan, and the makers say core features such as live view, two-way talk and motion alerts work without one. Some extras, like cloud backup or rich notification previews, may still need a paid plan, so check each maker's current feature list.
Is local storage safer than cloud storage for a doorbell?
It depends on what you want to protect against. Local storage keeps video in your home and avoids monthly fees, but if the storage is inside the doorbell, a thief who takes the doorbell also takes the recordings. Models that keep the card indoors (the Aqara chime) or can record to a separate base station or NVR (eufy HomeBase, Reolink NVR) reduce that risk.
Will a video doorbell work with my existing mechanical chime?
Some will. Reolink says its Video Doorbell WiFi can be wired to an existing mechanical chime, and eufy lists mechanical chimes as compatible with the E340. Aqara says the G410 does not connect to a traditional chime and uses its included chime instead. Tapo includes its own plug-in chime and a jumper for homes with an existing chime. Digital chimes, the kind that play a melody, are often not supported.
What transformer voltage does a wired video doorbell need?
Check your doorbell transformer, usually near the electrical panel, furnace or attic. Reolink lists 12-24V AC, Tapo lists 8-24V, and eufy lists 16-24V for wired use of the E340, with a 30VA transformer needed for its pre-record feature. If your transformer is below the maker's minimum, the doorbell may reboot or fail to ring the chime.
Is a battery or wired video doorbell better?
Wired doorbells never need recharging and are the only option here for 24/7 continuous recording, which the Reolink and the hardwired Tapo support. Battery doorbells are easier to install where there is no doorbell wiring, but you need to recharge or replace batteries, and they usually record shorter motion clips to save power.
Do I need an electrician to install a wired video doorbell?
Not always, since doorbell wiring is low voltage, but turn off power at the breaker before you touch any wiring. If you need to replace the transformer or are not comfortable working with wiring, hire a licensed electrician.
