Best Security Cameras Without a Subscription: Local Storage Picks
A security camera's sticker price is only part of the story. Many popular cameras keep recorded video in the cloud and charge an ongoing fee to see it. If you would rather pay once, look for a camera that records locally to a microSD card, built-in storage or a home base station. This guide picks five widely available Wi-Fi cameras that record locally without a required subscription and explains exactly what each maker says you give up without its paid plan.

How we chose
This is a research-based shortlist, not a hands-on test. We have not mounted these cameras, compared their footage or run them for months. Instead, we:
- limited the list to cameras from established brands that were listed on Amazon.com when we checked in October 2026;
- required a local recording option (microSD card, built-in storage or a compatible base station) that the maker says works without a subscription;
- took specifications and subscription details from each manufacturer's own product or support pages;
- matched each camera to a clear use case instead of ranking them by a single score;
- left out prices, because they change frequently, and did not summarize customer reviews.
Local storage vs. a subscription: what actually changes
Local storage means the camera saves video on a memory card inside the camera, on built-in memory, or on a base station in your home. You watch it in the maker's app, usually with no monthly fee. The trade-off is that the footage lives in the device: if the camera is stolen or damaged, the recordings may go with it.
Cloud plans copy clips to the maker's servers. Besides off-site backup, brands often bundle extras such as longer event history, notification snapshots or clips, and some AI detection types. What is included without a plan varies a lot by brand, so each pick below lists what its maker says.
Practical tip: a camera that records locally still needs your Wi-Fi and the maker's app for setup, live view and alerts. Check signal strength where you plan to mount it; our guide to fixing Wi-Fi dead zones helps if the signal is weak.

Wyze Cam v4: best for continuous recording
Who it is for
People who want a camera that records around the clock to a memory card, for example to cover a driveway or front room continuously rather than only on motion.
Key specs from Wyze

Frequently asked questions
Can a security camera work without a subscription?
Yes. Many cameras record video locally to a microSD card, built-in storage or a base station, and still offer live view and motion alerts in the free app. A subscription usually adds cloud video storage and sometimes extra features such as richer notifications or certain smart detection types. What is free varies by brand and model, so check the maker's plan page before buying.
What do I lose without a cloud plan?
Mainly off-site backup. If someone steals or breaks a camera that records only to its own memory card, the footage on it goes too. Depending on the brand, you may also lose notification snapshots or clips, longer event history, or some AI detection types. For example, Wyze says its person, pet, package and vehicle detection come with its paid plans, while TP-Link includes person detection on the Tapo cameras in this guide without a plan.
Do I need to buy a microSD card?
For the Tapo C120, Tapo C210, Wyze Cam v4 and Reolink Argus 4 Pro, yes: the makers say the card is sold separately. The eufy SoloCam S340 has 8 GB of built-in storage instead. Buy a reputable card within the maker's stated maximum capacity (512 GB for Tapo and Reolink, 256 GB per Wyze's spec page) and, for high-resolution recording, a fast card class recommended by the maker.
Can these cameras record 24/7?
Some can. Wyze says the Cam v4 supports continuous 24/7 recording to a microSD card. Battery and solar cameras such as the Reolink Argus 4 Pro and eufy SoloCam S340 record when motion triggers them, to save power. If you need continuous recording, choose a wired camera and check that the maker lists continuous recording for that model.
Do these cameras work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
Most do not. The Tapo C120, Tapo C210, Wyze Cam v4 and eufy SoloCam S340 are 2.4 GHz only according to their makers. The Reolink Argus 4 Pro supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Make sure the 2.4 GHz band on your router is on and that the signal is strong where you plan to mount the camera.
Will a local-storage camera keep recording if the internet goes down?
Local recording does not depend on cloud storage, but behavior during an outage varies by model and app, and you cannot view live video or get phone alerts remotely while your internet is down. Wyze, for example, says its cameras need an internet connection for live streaming in the app. Check the maker's support pages if offline recording matters to you.
