SwitchBot Hub and Matter Setup and Troubleshooting

Most SwitchBot devices, such as the Bot, Curtain, Blind Tilt and Lock, talk over Bluetooth. A SwitchBot hub is what puts them on Wi-Fi, so you can reach them away from home, use them with voice assistants and, with the Hub 2, Hub 3 or Hub Mini Matter Enabled, share them with Apple Home, Google Home or SmartThings over Matter. When the hub drops off Wi-Fi, everything behind it goes offline too. This guide follows SwitchBot’s own help center for setup, Wi-Fi fixes, Matter pairing and resets.

Quick answers

How to set up a SwitchBot Hub 2

SwitchBot’s steps (SwitchBot: How to set up Hub 2):

  1. Update the SwitchBot app.
  2. Connect your phone to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
  3. Power on the Hub 2.
  4. In the app, tap “+” in the top right, then “Add Device”, and choose Hub 2 under “Hub”.
  5. Press and hold the On and Off buttons on the Hub 2 screen together for 2 seconds.
  6. Enter your Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password, save, then tap “Finish”.

For the Hub Mini, SwitchBot says to allow Bluetooth and location access for the app, choose “Hub Mini” in Add Device, and hold the button on top until the light flashes before entering your Wi-Fi details (SwitchBot: Hub Mini setup and router settings). For the Hub 3, follow the in-app Add Device steps; Amazon’s listing reminds you to keep it on 2.4 GHz and to pick the 2.4 GHz band manually on dual-band routers if setup fails.

Fixing SwitchBot hub Wi-Fi connection failures

SwitchBot’s checklist for a hub that won’t connect or keeps dropping (SwitchBot: Hub Mini setup and router settings, SwitchBot: Hub Mini fails to connect to Wi-Fi):

CheckWhat SwitchBot says
Wi-Fi bandUse 2.4 GHz only. Mesh systems that combine bands usually connect at 2.4 GHz, but some routers push devices to 5 GHz. Repeaters should mainly use 2.4 GHz.
Security typeWPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK is recommended. WPA2-PEAP, WPA3-PEAP, WEP and WPS aren’t supported.
Router featuresTurn off MAC address filtering. Make sure DHCP gives the hub an IP address automatically. Check firewall settings; the hub uses MQTT over TCP port 8883.
PowerUse a 5V 1A or 5V 2A adapter. Low-power USB ports and poor cables can cause unstable behavior; try a different adapter and cable.
SignalA weak signal can cause drops or slow responses. Move the hub closer to the router, and do setup near the router.
IP address problemsUnplug both the router and the hub, wait 10 minutes, then reconnect them.
Wi-Fi detailsRe-enter the network in the app (hub, gear icon, Wi-Fi Settings, Edit). If your network isn’t listed, type the SSID manually.
FirmwareUpdate the hub and the router firmware. If the hub can’t join your Wi-Fi, connect it to your phone’s hotspot to update, then move it back.

Our note: if your router uses one name for both bands and you can’t separate them, many routers let you add a 2.4 GHz-only IoT network. See our IoT network guide for the trade-offs.

Adding a SwitchBot hub to Apple Home

SwitchBot’s Hub 3 steps, which match the Hub 2 (SwitchBot: Hub 3 Matter setup (iOS), SwitchBot: Matter bridge devices on third-party platforms):

  1. Make sure the hub is already in the SwitchBot app and its firmware is current.
  2. Put your iPhone, HomePod or Apple TV, and the hub on the same 2.4 GHz network.
  3. Copy the Matter code from the SwitchBot app: your hub, gear icon, Matter Setup.
  4. Reset the hub by holding On and Off for 15 seconds. On the Hub 2, the panel lights go out, then come back with a slow-flashing light: that’s Matter setup mode.
  5. In Apple Home, tap “+”, Add Accessory, More options, “My Accessory Isn’t Shown Here”, Enter Code, and paste the code. You can also scan the QR code on the back of the hub.
  6. Back in the SwitchBot app, use Matter Setup, Add secondary devices, to share your other SwitchBot devices.

Adding a SwitchBot hub to Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings

Google Home: you need a Google Matter controller such as a Nest Hub, with the phone, Nest device and hub on the same 2.4 GHz network. Copy the Matter code from the SwitchBot app, reset the hub (On and Off for 15 seconds), then in Google Home tap Add, “Matter-enabled device”, and paste the code or scan the QR code on the back (SwitchBot: Hub 2 Matter setup (Android)). SwitchBot says the Hub 2 can share up to 8 secondary devices this way; the Hub 3 can sync up to 30 to Apple Home (SwitchBot: Hub 3 Matter setup (iOS)).

SmartThings: with a Matter-capable Samsung hub online, get the pairing code from the device’s Matter Setup page in the SwitchBot app, then in SmartThings tap “+”, Add device, Partner devices, Matter (SwitchBot: Matter bridge devices on third-party platforms).

Alexa: Amazon’s listing says the hubs work with Alexa. SwitchBot doesn’t give a separate Alexa Matter guide on the pages we used, so follow the in-app steps in the SwitchBot app.

When Bluetooth devices drop off the hub

If a Bot, Curtain or Lock shows offline, SwitchBot suggests (SwitchBot: Bluetooth devices disconnect from hubs):

With more than one hub, assign each Bluetooth device to the hub nearest to it.

How to reset a SwitchBot Hub 2 or Hub 3

Press and hold the On and Off buttons on the display together for 15 seconds (SwitchBot: How to reset Hub 2, SwitchBot: Hub 3 Matter setup (iOS)). On the Hub 2, SwitchBot says this resets the Wi-Fi details and indicator light settings to defaults, but keeps logs, learned infrared remotes, and scenes and automations (SwitchBot: How to reset Hub 2). This is also the step SwitchBot asks for before adding the hub to Apple Home or Google Home over Matter.

On the Hub Mini, holding the button on top until the light flashes puts it into setup mode for re-entering Wi-Fi details (SwitchBot: Hub Mini setup and router settings).
