Best Smart Lighting Starter Kits: Hue Bridge Kits vs Wi-Fi Matter Bulbs

Smart lighting is one of the easiest ways to start a smart home, but the first choice matters: a hub-based system like Philips Hue, or Wi-Fi bulbs that connect straight to your router. This guide compares the two, explains what each starter kit includes and lists kits that were in stock and sold by Amazon.com when we checked, based on Philips Hue, TP-Link and WiZ documentation.

What to check before you buy

  1. Bulb base and shape. All picks here are A19 E26, the standard US household bulb. Check fixtures for E12 candle bases or BR30 floods.
  2. Brightness. An 800-lumen bulb is roughly a 60 W equivalent; the Tapo L535E and Hue Bridge Pro kit bulbs list up to 1100 lumens.
  3. Your platform. If you use Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa, Matter support lets you control everything in one app.
  4. Wall switches. Plan a remote or smart switch so people do not cut power to the bulbs.
  5. Your Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi bulbs need 2.4 GHz coverage where they are installed. If setup fails on a mesh system, see our IoT network guide.
  6. Room to grow. If you expect dozens of lights, a Bridge Pro saves adding a second Bridge later.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a hub for smart bulbs?

Not always. Wi-Fi bulbs such as the Tapo L535E and WiZ bulbs connect straight to your router, and both support Matter. Philips Hue bulbs can work over Bluetooth in a single room, but Philips Hue says the Bridge unlocks the full system, including control away from home, automations and larger setups.

What is the difference between the Hue Bridge and the Bridge Pro?

Philips Hue lists the standard Bridge at 50 lights and 12 accessories, and the Bridge Pro at 150+ lights and 50+ accessories. The Bridge Pro also adds MotionAware, which uses Hue lights as motion sensors, and storage for up to 500 scenes. Most homes only need one Bridge.

Do Hue lights work with Matter?

Philips Hue lists Matter among the platforms the Bridge works with, along with Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home and SmartThings. With a Bridge, Hue lights can be added to a Matter platform through it.

Will Wi-Fi bulbs slow down my network?

Each Wi-Fi bulb is another device on your router, and they use 2.4 GHz. That is fine for a few rooms. For many bulbs, a Zigbee system like Hue keeps lights off your Wi-Fi; Philips Hue says the Bridge uses Zigbee so lighting stays responsive when Wi-Fi is busy. Our IoT network guide covers settings that help 2.4 GHz devices.

Can I mix brands in one app?

Yes, if they support Matter or the same assistant. Tapo and WiZ bulbs can be added to Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa through Matter, and Hue joins through the Bridge. Brand apps still offer the most features, such as Hue scenes or WiZ effects.

What about wall switches?

Smart bulbs need power, so a regular wall switch turned off makes them unreachable. Use a smart remote such as the Hue Tap dial, or a smart switch with regular bulbs. Our Matter smart switch guide explains when a switch is the better choice.
