Govee Lights Setup and Wi-Fi Fixes

Govee bulbs and strip lights pair with your phone over Bluetooth first, then join your home Wi-Fi through the Govee Home app. Most connection problems come down to a handful of things Govee lists in its own manuals and FAQs: the light only works on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, the phone has to be close during setup, the password must be exact, and some router settings get in the way. This guide follows Govee’s steps for setup, Wi-Fi errors, Matter and voice assistants.

How to pair a Govee light

Govee’s pairing steps are the same for bulbs and strip lights (Govee’s Strip Light 2 Pro (H61F5) manual, Govee’s H6006 bulb manual):

  1. Install the Govee Home app from the App Store or Google Play, then sign in or create an account.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth on your phone, and power on the light.
  3. In the app, tap the “+” icon in the top right corner and search for your model number (for example, H61F5 for Strip Light 2 Pro or H6006 for the A19 bulb).
  4. Tap the device and follow the on-screen steps. When the app asks for Wi-Fi, choose your 2.4 GHz network and enter the password.

Unfurl a strip light before you power it on, and stick the control box up before connecting the power adapter if that makes installation easier (Govee’s Strip Light 2 Pro (H61F5) manual).

Why a Govee light won’t connect to Wi-Fi

Govee’s checklist for Wi-Fi failures, in order (Govee: Strip light and app FAQs, Govee’s H6006 bulb manual):

StepWhat to do
1. Use 2.4 GHzConfirm your phone is on the 2.4 GHz network. If your router combines both bands under one name, give the 2.4 GHz band its own name.
2. Check the signalMove the light closer to the router, or restart the router.
3. Check the passwordRetype it carefully and make sure there is no space after the last character.
4. Check router settingsTurn off special settings such as MAC address filtering.
5. Start overDelete the light from the Govee Home app and unplug it for 10 minutes.
6. ResetReset the light to factory settings (see below), then pair again.
7. Hotspot testTurn on your phone’s hotspot and try connecting the light to it. If that works, the issue is likely your home network.

If your router does not let you split the bands, see our guides to putting smart home devices on their own network and Wi-Fi that keeps disconnecting.

Light shows offline or keeps dropping

For a bulb that loses connection, Govee’s manual says to check power, check that your home network is stable, and test whether the router has too many devices by connecting the bulb to a phone hotspot instead (Govee’s H6006 bulb manual). In the app, a red exclamation mark on the Wi-Fi icon means the light is not online, and you will only be able to control it over Bluetooth nearby (Govee: Strip light and app FAQs).

A large smart home can push a router’s device count up quickly; see fixing Wi-Fi dead zones if lights farther from the router drop off most.

Setting up Govee lights with Matter

Matter-enabled Govee lights can be added to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings. Govee’s requirements (Govee: Matter FAQ, Govee’s Strip Light 2 Pro (H61F5) manual):

Find the Matter QR code or number on the product or on the Device Settings page in the Govee Home app, then scan it or enter it in your Matter app (Govee: Matter FAQ). Govee’s Matter runs over Wi-Fi, not Thread.

Two cautions from Govee: changing networks may stop Matter working, and if you switch the light’s Wi-Fi network from the Govee Home app, Matter is disabled until you reset the light and add it to Matter again. If you want both the Govee app and Matter, connect to Matter first (Govee: Matter FAQ, Govee’s Strip Light 2 Pro (H61F5) manual). To add a light to a second ecosystem, generate a new setup code from the first ecosystem’s app (Govee: Matter FAQ). Our Matter vs Thread explainer covers the basics.

Alexa or Google Assistant not responding

Voice control only works when the light is connected to Wi-Fi, so check for the red exclamation mark first (Govee: Strip light and app FAQs). To link Alexa, name the light in the Govee Home app, enable the Govee Home skill in the Alexa app, sign in with your Govee account, then discover devices.

If the light is online but Alexa still does not respond, Govee suggests signing out of the Govee Home app, linking the Govee account to Alexa again, then signing back in (Govee: Strip light and app FAQs). If scenes disappear from Alexa, run device discovery again, or disable and re-enable the Govee Home skill and sign in again.

Frequently asked questions

Do Govee lights work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

No. Govee’s manuals say a 2.4 GHz router with 802.11 b/g/n is required and 5 GHz is not supported. If your router uses one name for both bands, Govee suggests separate names.

Why won’t my Govee light connect to Wi-Fi?

Govee lists 5 GHz networks, weak signal, a mistyped password (including a trailing space) and router settings such as MAC filtering. Delete the light from the app, unplug it for 10 minutes, reset it and test with a phone hotspot.

How do I reset Govee strip lights?

On Strip Light 2 Pro and many control-box strips, hold the power button and quickly press the middle button four times. Other models differ, so check the manual.

Why do my Govee lights show a red exclamation mark?

It means the light is not connected to Wi-Fi, so it can only be controlled over Bluetooth nearby and voice assistants won’t work.

How do I add a Govee light to Matter?

Find the Matter QR code or number on the product or in the app’s Device Settings, then scan it in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings. Govee requires IPv6 and setup within 15 minutes of first power-on.

Will Matter keep working if I change Wi-Fi?

Not reliably. Govee says changing networks may cause Matter to malfunction, and switching networks in the Govee app disables Matter until you reset the light and add it again.

Why is Alexa not controlling my Govee lights?

Check the light is online first. If it is, Govee suggests signing out of the Govee Home app, relinking the Govee account in Alexa, then signing back in.

How many Govee lights can one phone control?

Govee’s bulb manual says typically up to 6 devices over Bluetooth at once, depending on the phone, and up to 50 bulbs per phone when the network is normal.
