Philips Hue Bridge Setup, Adding Hue to Matter and Fixing Unreachable Lights
Philips Hue lights are controlled through a Hue Bridge (or the newer Bridge Pro), the Hue app and, if you like, Apple Home, Google Home or Amazon Alexa. Most problems come down to three things: getting the Bridge online, linking Hue to the smart home platform you use, and lights that show as "unreachable" in the app. This guide covers each one, step by step. Every step and light meaning comes from Philips Hue's official support pages, which we link so you can check the details.

Quick answers
- Setting up a new Bridge: scan the Bridge's QR code in the Hue app before plugging it in, then follow the on-screen steps.
- Third light on the Bridge is off: update the Bridge in Settings > Software update; you may need to repeat it.
- App cannot find the Bridge: search by IP address. Tap I need help, then More options.
- Adding Hue to Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa: with a Bridge, go to Settings > Smart Home in the Hue app and choose your platform.
- A light is unreachable: make sure the wall switch is on and the light is in range, then open the light's settings screen in the Hue app for reconnect steps.
- Lights keep dropping off: try a Zigbee channel change. Factory reset a light only if re-adding it fails.
Step 1: Set up the Hue Bridge
From Philips Hue's Bridge setup guide. Hue products use QR code setup, so you can scan several devices in one go.
- Do not plug in the Bridge yet. Keep it within reach, because you will scan its QR code first. If you are adding other Hue devices too, keep them together so you can scan all their codes in the same step.
- Install and open the Hue app. The first time you open it, the app asks if you want to add a Bridge. Tap Yes. If you skipped it, open Settings, tap Devices and tap the blue plus (+) icon.
- Scan the QR code and tap Next. If your product has no QR code, tap No QR code to add it by searching.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to finish setup.
Philips Hue's third-light article describes the classic route: connect the Bridge to power and to your router, wait for the first and second lights, then add the Bridge in the app and tap Search. If the app cannot find it, tap I need help, then More options, to search by IP address.
How to find the Bridge's IP address
You need the Bridge's MAC address, which is printed on the back of the Bridge. Philips Hue lists three ways to find the matching IP address:
- A network scanner app such as Fing shows connected devices; look for "Philips Hue" or the Bridge's MAC address.
- Sign in to your router's settings page and match the MAC address to an IP address.
- On a Windows computer, open File Explorer, select Network, right-click the Philips Hue Bridge and open its settings.
What the Bridge lights mean
From Philips Hue's Bridge support FAQ and third-light article.
Hue Bridge (square, four indicators)
| Light | What Philips Hue says it means |
|---|---|
| Left light | The Bridge is connected to power |
| Middle light | The Bridge is connected to your router’s network |
| Right light | The Bridge is connected to the internet and Hue’s online services. If it stays off, update the Bridge software in Settings > Software update (you may need to repeat it) |
| Blue ring around the button | Zigbee is running, so the Bridge can talk to your lights |
Hue Bridge Pro
Philips Hue recommends checking the app and your Wi-Fi settings first, especially after changing internet provider. The Bridge Pro has two indicators:
| Indicator | State | What Philips Hue says it means |
|---|---|---|
| Connectivity | No light | Power is off |
| Connectivity | Pulsing blue | Connecting for setup |
| Connectivity | Solid blue | Connected for setup |
| Connectivity | Pulsing red | Cannot connect to Wi-Fi |
| Connectivity | Solid white | Online and connected |
| Connectivity | Pulsing amber | An IP address issue has been detected |
| Connectivity | Continuous red or yellow | Contact Philips Hue customer care |
| Power | No light | Power is off |
| Power | Red | Getting ready for setup |
| Power | Pulsing white | Working on setup |
| Power | White | Powered and working |
Philips Hue also notes that the Bridge Pro uses a USB-C power supply and the Bridge uses a traditional power jack, so the two adapters are not interchangeable. Any RJ45 Ethernet cable works with the Bridge Pro, though Philips Hue recommends the supplied one.
Step 2: Add Hue to Matter (Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa)
From Philips Hue's Matter setup and support guide and Matter page. There are two ways to use Hue with Matter.
| Feature | Through a Hue Bridge | Direct to a Matter controller |
|---|---|---|
| Works with all Hue bulbs | Yes, including older bulbs without Matter | Only Matter-enabled lights (Matter logo on the packaging) |
| Adaptive lighting in Apple Home | Yes | No |
| Multi-admin (more than one platform) | Yes | Yes |
| Thread | No | Yes, if supported |
| Local control without internet | Yes | Yes, if Thread is used |
| Gradient, dynamic scenes, Entertainment sync | Yes | Not listed |
Option 1: Through a Bridge or Bridge Pro
Philips Hue says a Bridge or Bridge Pro already supports Matter through an automatic software update, and that all Hue products, new and existing, work with Matter when connected through a Bridge. Products connected only by Bluetooth cannot be used with Matter, and the Play HDMI sync box and the dial on the Tap dial switch do not support Matter.
- Set up the Bridge and add your lights in the Hue app (Step 1).
- In the Hue app, go to Settings > Smart Home.
- Choose Apple, Google or Alexa and follow the linking instructions.
Philips Hue lists these controllers for Hue with a Bridge: on Google, Google Home, Google Home Mini, Nest Mini, Nest Audio, Nest Hub (1st and 2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro and Google TV Streamer (4K); on Alexa, Echo Dot (2nd gen and newer), Echo Spot, Echo Show (all generations), Echo Hub, Echo Studio, Echo Flex, Echo Plus (2nd gen), Echo Input and several eero models (Pro 6E, Pro 6, 6+, 6, PoE 6, PoE gateway and Max 7).
Option 2: Direct, without a Bridge
You need a Matter-enabled Hue light and a Matter controller that is also a Thread border router, such as an Apple HomePod mini, Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) or Amazon Echo (4th gen).
- Open Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa and add a new device.
- Scan the Matter QR code from the installation guide, or enter the 11-digit pairing code. If the QR code is lost, use the manual pairing code printed on the bulb.
- Power on the bulb and make sure it is in pairing mode.
- Name it and assign it to a room.
If the bulb was previously connected to a Hue Bridge, remove it from the Bridge first. Philips Hue says iOS 18 and later can pair Matter devices in Apple Home without a HomePod or Apple TV. Not sure which device in your home can act as a border router? See our Thread border router guide and Matter vs Thread explained.
Adding Hue to a second platform
Matter allows several platforms to control the same device. Open the app where the device was first added, generate a new setup code, and enter that code in the second platform.
Step 3: Fix "unreachable" lights
Philips Hue's smart lighting FAQ says a light usually shows as unreachable because it has been physically switched off, for example with a wall switch, or because it is out of range of the system. Work through these steps in order.
- Check the wall switch and power. A smart bulb needs constant power, so leave its wall switch on and control it from the app, a Hue switch or a voice assistant.
- Use the app's reconnect steps. Philips Hue's app release notes say that since Hue app 5.47.0 (July 22, 2025) you can tap an unreachable light's settings screen to find instructions on how to reconnect it. Hue app 5.53.0 (October 14, 2025) added the same for switches and sensors.
- Check the Bridge. Make sure the network and internet lights are on (see the light tables above) and that the Bridge software is up to date in Settings > Software update.
- Bring the light within range. If a light is far from the Bridge and other Hue lights, try it closer to confirm range is the problem.
- Try a Zigbee channel change. According to Philips Hue's Hue app FAQ, if your lights have connectivity issues with the Bridge, open the Settings tab, tap Bridge settings, tap Zigbee channel, choose Change channel and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Delete and re-add the light. Philips Hue's FAQ suggests updating the app, then going to Settings > Lights, tapping the light and tapping Delete at the bottom. Then, in the Home tab, open a Room, tap the three-dots (…) icon, tap Add lights and scan the light's QR code.
- Factory reset the light as a last resort. See the next section.
How to factory reset a Hue light
From Philips Hue's light factory reset guide. A reset erases the light's settings so it can be added to a Bridge or Bluetooth setup again. Philips Hue recommends troubleshooting first.
| Method | Steps from Philips Hue |
|---|---|
| Serial number | Settings > Lights > blue plus (+) > Use serial number. Enter the six-character serial printed on the light or its cord tag, tap the blue plus (+) and tap Search. Serials use only 0 to 9 and A to F; there is never a letter O, only the number 0. The light flashes when it has been reset. |
| Hue app with a Bridge | Only for a light that is already in the app and working: Settings > Lights > choose the light > Delete, then follow the on-screen instructions. |
| Hue dimmer switch | Turn the light off at the power and back on. Within 30 minutes, hold the dimmer switch near the light and hold the top and bottom buttons together for at least 10 seconds, until the light flashes. |
| Hue Tap dial switch | Turn the light off at the power and back on. Within 30 minutes, hold the Tap dial near the light and press and hold the Setup button on the back for at least 10 seconds, until the light flashes. |
| Bluetooth mode (no Bridge) | Settings > Lights > Add lights to add the light, then Settings > Lights > tap the light > Reset. |
Resetting the Bridge itself
Philips Hue strongly advises resetting a Bridge only if a Hue support agent tells you to. Holding the Restore factory settings button on the back deletes your scenes, automations, widgets and room and zone setup, and some lights may then need their serial numbers entered to reconnect. A Bridge Pro is reset by pressing and holding the reset button on the back with a thin, soft-tipped needle or a paper clip, while it stays powered, until the indicators change color.

Philips Hue Bridge: the hub for Hue and Matter
The Bridge connects to your router with Ethernet, runs Zigbee for your lights, and, according to Philips Hue, enables Matter for every Hue product connected to it, including older bulbs without Matter. It is the piece most of this guide's steps depend on.

Frequently asked questions
Why are my Philips Hue lights unreachable?
Philips Hue's smart lighting FAQ gives two main reasons: the light has been physically switched off, for example with a wall switch, or it is out of range of the system. Turn the wall switch back on and leave it on, then check whether the light comes back in the Hue app. Since Hue app 5.47.0, tapping an unreachable light's settings screen shows reconnect instructions.
What do the lights on the Hue Bridge mean?
On the square Hue Bridge, Philips Hue says the left light means power is connected, the middle light means the Bridge is connected to your router's network, the right light means it is connected to the internet and Hue's services, and the ring around the button means Zigbee is running.
Why is the third light on my Hue Bridge off?
Philips Hue says the third light will not turn on if the Bridge is not running the latest software. In the Hue app, go to Settings > Software update and follow the instructions; you may need to repeat the update before the light comes on.
Do I need a Hue Bridge to use Hue with Matter?
Not always. Philips Hue says you can use Matter through a Bridge or Bridge Pro, which works with all Hue products including older bulbs, or connect Matter-enabled Hue bulbs directly to a Matter controller that is also a Thread border router. Lights connected only over Bluetooth cannot be used with Matter.
How do I add Hue to more than one smart home app?
Matter supports multiple admins. Philips Hue says to open the app where the device was first added, generate a new setup code there, and enter that code in the other platform.
Should I factory reset my Hue Bridge?
Only if Philips Hue support tells you to. Holding the Restore factory settings button deletes your scenes, automations, widgets and room and zone setup, and some lights may then need to be re-added using their serial numbers.
What is a Zigbee channel change?
Hue lights talk to the Bridge over Zigbee. If lights have trouble staying connected to the Bridge, Philips Hue says a Zigbee channel change may help: open the Settings tab, tap Bridge settings, tap Zigbee channel, choose Change channel and follow the on-screen steps.
