Arlo Camera Setup and Offline Fixes

Arlo cameras connect in one of two ways: straight to your Wi-Fi router, or through an Arlo SmartHub or Base Station that is wired to the router. Many current models can do either. Knowing which path your camera uses tells you where to look when it goes offline. This guide covers setup problems, what the camera light means, SmartHub fixes, changing Wi-Fi and placement, following Arlo’s own help pages.

Quick answers

Direct Wi-Fi vs. SmartHub

Arlo’s current Essential (3rd Gen) and Pro (6th Gen) cameras can connect directly to your Wi-Fi router or through an optional SmartHub. Arlo says a SmartHub adds a secure personal network, helps manage Wi-Fi traffic, may improve battery life and supports local storage; it needs a free Ethernet port on your router (Arlo Essential Security Camera (3rd Gen) Spec Sheet, Arlo Pro Security Camera 2K (6th Gen) Spec Sheet).

If every camera on a SmartHub goes offline together, start with the hub section below. If only one direct-Wi-Fi camera is offline, start with the camera steps.

Fix a camera that is not found during setup

Arlo’s checklist when the app cannot discover a camera (Arlo: Camera not discovered during setup):

  1. Use 2.4 GHz. Most Arlo devices need 2.4 GHz during setup. Arlo says some models, such as the Pro 5S, can move to 5 GHz after setup.
  2. Same network. Your phone must be on the same 2.4 GHz network you are adding the camera to.
  3. Check the details. Wi-Fi names and passwords are case-sensitive.
  4. Stay close. Keep the camera within 10 to 15 ft of the router during setup.
  5. Watch the light. It should blink blue (the doorbell ring light blinks white). Pairing mode times out after two minutes; press the sync button again if needed.
  6. Listen for the chime after the camera scans the QR code on your phone.
  7. Turn off any VPN on your phone.
  8. Factory reset the camera only as a last step.

What the Arlo camera light means

From Arlo’s LED article for Essential, Pro 4 and Ultra-group cameras (Arlo: What do the LEDs on my camera mean?):

LightWhat Arlo says it meansWhat to do
Solid bluePowered onNothing; check the app if it still shows offline
Slow blinking blueReady to pairContinue setup in the Arlo Secure App
Fast blinking bluePaired successfullyFinish setup
Slow blinking amberOut of range, connection error or low batteryCharge it, move it closer, or check Wi-Fi
Fast blinking amberFailed to syncPress sync again and stay close to the router or hub
Alternating blue and amberFirmware update in progressDo not remove power; wait

Arlo notes some differences by model: on Pro 5 and Pro (6th Gen), four amber blinks mean a factory reset was triggered; on the Wired Floodlight and Essential Indoor cameras, solid amber means an internet error and slow blinking amber means a setup error (Arlo: What do the LEDs on my camera mean?).

Fix an Arlo camera that is offline

Arlo’s steps, in order (Arlo: Why is my camera offline?):

  1. Check the battery. Keep it above 25% and charge it if it is low.
  2. Run Arlo’s Wi-Fi checks. Arlo points to its Wi-Fi Troubleshooting Tool. Many newer models also have a Connection Test under Devices, the camera, settings, Wi-Fi Network (Arlo: Wi-Fi Connection Test).
  3. Power cycle the camera. Remove the battery for 10 seconds, or unplug a wired camera for 10 seconds. For the Wired Floodlight, Arlo says to hold the Pairing button for at least 5 but under 15 seconds; holding 15 seconds or more resets it.
  4. Check the internet. Make sure the router or SmartHub is online, and restart the router by unplugging it for 30 seconds.
  5. Move the camera closer to the router or hub.
  6. Changed your Wi-Fi name or password? Change the camera’s network (steps below).
  7. Reduce interference. Keep at least 10 ft from the router or hub and 6.5 ft from other Arlo devices, and try a different router channel.
  8. Temperature. Arlo says cameras can shut down for a while when too hot or too cold.
  9. Check status.arlo.com for a service outage.
  10. Last resort: remove the camera from your account, factory reset it and set it up again.

Fix a SmartHub or Base Station that is offline

Arlo says an Internet light that is solid or blinking amber points to a problem, while blue or green means the hub is online. Its steps (Arlo: SmartHub or Base Station offline):

  1. Check the Ethernet cable at both ends, or swap it. You can test the cable and router port with a laptop.
  2. Check power. Use a wall outlet, not a switched outlet or surge strip.
  3. Restart it. With Ethernet connected, unplug power for 30 seconds, plug it back in and wait about two minutes.
  4. Connect to the main router. Arlo does not recommend connecting a SmartHub or Base Station to an extender or mesh point.
  5. Turn off router VPN features if you use them.

Arlo warns that factory resetting a SmartHub removes all its cameras from your account, so treat it as a last step. When adding cameras to a hub, Arlo’s advice is to set up the hub first, sync one camera at a time, and charge a camera for 30 minutes if its light blinks amber.

Change the Wi-Fi network on an Arlo camera

Before you start, Arlo says the device should be in Standby, batteries should be at 30% or more, and router band steering should be turned off during the change; you can turn it back on afterward. Then (Arlo: Change the Wi-Fi network on a camera):

  1. Open the Arlo Secure App, go to Devices and select the camera.
  2. Open settings, then Connected to (or Wi-Fi Network), then Change Network.
  3. Put your phone on the 2.4 GHz network and tap Continue.
  4. Enter the Wi-Fi name and password.
  5. Press sync on the camera; when the light flashes, tap Continue.
  6. Let the camera scan the QR code, wait for the chime, then tap Finish.

Range and placement

Arlo’s placement advice (Arlo: Range and placement):

If a direct-Wi-Fi camera keeps dropping, stronger Wi-Fi near it helps. See our eero, TP-Link Deco and Google Nest Wifi guides.

Arlo cameras and network gear

The first two picks are current Arlo cameras sold by Amazon.com; specs come from Arlo’s spec sheets. The last two are the network pieces Arlo’s fixes point to: a solid wired link for a SmartHub, and stronger Wi-Fi for cameras that connect directly.

Arlo Essential Security Camera 2K (3rd Gen)

A wire-free camera with a built-in rechargeable battery. Arlo lists 2K video, a 130° diagonal view, color night vision with a spotlight, two-way audio and both 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. It connects directly to your router or to a compatible SmartHub (VMB5000 or VMB4540), and Arlo says setup is improved via Bluetooth compared with the previous generation (Arlo Essential Security Camera (3rd Gen) Spec Sheet).

Arlo Pro Security Camera 2K (6th Gen)

Step up for a wider view and a removable battery. Arlo lists 2K HDR video, a 160° diagonal view, a built-in siren, USB-C charging and up to 15% longer battery life than the previous Pro, with 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi and optional SmartHub support. Arlo notes it is not compatible with SecureLink (Arlo Pro Security Camera 2K (6th Gen) Spec Sheet).

Amazon Basics Cat 6 Ethernet cable (15 ft)

A SmartHub or Base Station needs a wired link to your main router, and Arlo’s offline steps start with checking or swapping that cable. A longer cable lets you place the hub more centrally while keeping Arlo’s suggested 6 ft from the router.

Amazon eero 6+ (3-pack)

Mesh system for cameras that connect directly to Wi-Fi and sit in a weak spot. Keep any SmartHub wired to the main router, since Arlo does not recommend connecting a hub to a mesh point. eero 6+ broadcasts both bands under one name; see our eero guide if a camera struggles during 2.4 GHz setup.
