Apple Home Hub and “No Response” Troubleshooting
When an Apple Home accessory says “No Response,” the Home app can’t reach it. Sometimes that’s one device, and sometimes it’s every accessory from your home hub down. Apple’s fixes depend on which, so start by checking whether accessories from one manufacturer or several are affected. A home hub (a HomePod or Apple TV) is what lets you control accessories away from home and run automations, and Apple says you must set one up to add Matter accessories (Apple Support: Set up your home hub, Apple Support: If your accessory shows No Response in the Home app).

Quick answers
- Only one brand says No Response? Turn on Bluetooth, restart the accessory, check the maker’s app for updates, and restart any bridge for it (Apple Support: If your accessory shows No Response in the Home app).
- Several brands say No Response? Update your iPhone, make sure it’s on the same Wi-Fi as the accessories, and restart the network in order: modem and router, hubs, accessories, then iPhone (Apple Support: If your accessory shows No Response in the Home app).
- Works at home but not away? Remote control needs a home hub (Apple Support: If your accessory shows No Response in the Home app).
- Accessory won’t add? Use an iPhone or iPad on the same Wi-Fi, and if you see “Network incompatible,” connect to the 2.4 GHz network (Apple Support: If you can’t add an accessory to the Home app).
- Router settings? Apple recommends one network name for all bands, WPA3 Personal or WPA2/WPA3, and no hidden network (Apple Support: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points).
Check and set up your home hub
From Apple’s home hub article (Apple Support: Set up your home hub):
- HomePod and HomePod mini become home hubs automatically when you set them up.
- Apple TV: go to Settings, AirPlay and Apple Home, Room, and choose a room. It becomes a hub once it’s in a room.
- See your hubs: in the Home app, tap More, then Home Settings, then Home Hubs & Bridges. Your active hub appears at the top. You can turn off Automatic Selection to choose a preferred hub.
- Thread accessories need a Thread border router, such as a HomePod mini, an Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet, or a supported third-party border router.
If your home hub isn’t working
Apple’s checks (Apple Support: Set up your home hub):
- Only the home owner can add a HomePod or Apple TV as a home hub. Check the owner in Home Settings.
- On Apple TV, make sure the owner is selected as Default User (Settings, Users and Accounts).
- Update the hub to the latest software, then restart it.
- Make sure the hub is in your home, powered on and connected to your home Wi-Fi.
- Turn on iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication for your Apple Account.
Fix No Response, step by step
| If… | Apple suggests |
|---|---|
| Accessories from one manufacturer | Turn on Bluetooth on your iPhone, restart the accessory, check the manufacturer’s app for firmware or a reset, restart its bridge or hub by unplugging it, then remove and re-add the accessory |
| Third-party Thread accessories | Unplug them or remove batteries for 5 minutes, reconnect them, then wait 10 minutes for the Thread network to stabilize |
| Accessories from several manufacturers | Update your iPhone, close and reopen the Home app, check your iPhone is on the same Wi-Fi as the accessories, turn on Bluetooth, check for accessory firmware, then restart in order: modem and router, bridges and home hubs, accessories, iPhone |
| Still no response | Check VPN and third-party security software for network problems, then contact the manufacturer or Apple Support |

If you can’t add an accessory
From Apple’s article on adding accessories (Apple Support: If you can’t add an accessory to the Home app):
- Use an iPhone or iPad. You can’t add accessories from a Mac.
- Make sure the accessory works with Apple Home or Matter, is powered on and is close to your router.
- Keep your iPhone on the same Wi-Fi network you want the accessory to join.
- No Add Accessory option? The owner must allow “Add and Edit Accessories” for you.
- “Accessory already added”: reset the accessory using the maker’s steps, then add it again.
- “Network incompatible”: connect your iPhone to your 2.4 GHz network for setup.
- “Accessory not supported”: update the accessory’s firmware in the maker’s app.
- “Unable to add”: check power, move it closer to the router, restart bridges and hubs, and reset the accessory.
Router settings Apple recommends
Apple’s router guidance applies to all its devices, and it helps smart home accessories too (Apple Support: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points):
| Setting | Apple’s recommendation |
|---|---|
| Security | WPA3 Personal, or WPA2/WPA3 Transitional for older devices. Avoid WEP, TKIP and WPA/WPA2 mixed modes |
| Network name | One name shared by all bands, not hidden |
| MAC address filtering | Off |
| Firmware | Automatic updates on |
| Radio mode | All (all Wi-Fi standards) |
| Channel | Auto; 20 MHz width on 2.4 GHz |
| DHCP | Only one DHCP server on the network; lease time of 8 hours for home networks |
| NAT | Only one device doing NAT (usually the router), to avoid double NAT |
| WMM | On |
