Schlage Encode and Kwikset Halo Wi-Fi Troubleshooting
Schlage’s Encode series and Kwikset’s Halo locks connect straight to your home Wi-Fi with no hub, so a router change, a tricky password or a weak signal at the door can knock them offline. The lock still works with its keypad or key when that happens. You just lose remote control and notifications until it reconnects. This guide covers both brands’ official fixes (Schlage: “Unreachable” error, Encode Series locks, Kwikset: Troubleshoot the Wi-Fi connection of a Halo smart lock).

Quick answers
- Schlage Encode won’t pair? Your Wi-Fi password must be 24 characters or fewer, with no spaces and no $ or & characters (Schlage: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi pairing issues with the Schlage Encode).
- Schlage shows “Unreachable”? The lock has lost its connection to the Schlage cloud. Check your internet, speed and the signal at the lock, then do a soft reset (Schlage: “Unreachable” error, Encode Series locks).
- Kwikset Halo can’t find your network? Make sure the router is broadcasting 2.4 GHz, the network isn’t hidden and it uses WPA2 (or WPA3 on Halo Select) (Kwikset: Troubleshoot the Wi-Fi connection of a Halo smart lock).
- New router or password? Halo Select can switch networks from the Kwikset app. Other Halo models need a network reset (Kwikset: Troubleshoot the Wi-Fi connection of a Halo smart lock).
- Weak signal at the door? Both brands point to improving Wi-Fi coverage. Kwikset recommends an extender placed between the router and the lock (Kwikset: Troubleshoot the Wi-Fi connection of a Halo smart lock).

Schlage Encode: fix “Unreachable”
A grey triangle and “Unreachable” under the lock name in the Schlage Home app mean the Encode, Encode Plus or Encode lever has lost its cloud connection, so remote locking, code changes and notifications stop working. Schlage’s steps (Schlage: “Unreachable” error, Encode Series locks):
- Test the Wi-Fi. Connect your phone to the same network as the lock and turn off mobile data. If the network isn’t listed or has no internet, fix the router first.
- Test the speed. Schlage says the lock needs at least 1 Mbps to work and download firmware.
- Check signal at the lock. Schlage treats -60 to below -70 as fair or poor.
- Soft reset: retract the bolt, remove the battery cover and battery tray, wait 10 seconds, reinsert the tray firmly, then extend and retract the bolt. Log out of the Schlage Home app (or other app) and log back in. Lock data is stored in the cloud, so it isn’t lost.
- Still unreachable? Delete the lock from the app, do a factory default reset, and pair it again. If that fails, contact Schlage support.
Schlage Encode: fix Wi-Fi pairing errors
Schlage says these password problems cause commissioning errors when you pair (Schlage: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi pairing issues with the Schlage Encode):
- Passwords longer than 24 characters.
- Special characters such as $ and &, which the Schlage Home app doesn’t recognize.
- Any space in the password.
Change the Wi-Fi password to meet these rules, then pair again. If you change your router’s password, every device on the network will need the new one, so plan it for a convenient time.
Schlage Sense Pro: it supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and for Apple Home pairing your home hub, iPhone and lock should be on the same Wi-Fi network. Hands-free unlock with Apple home keys needs a Thread-enabled Apple home hub (Schlage: Sense Pro FAQ).
Kwikset Halo: fix Wi-Fi connection problems
Kwikset’s steps (Kwikset: Troubleshoot the Wi-Fi connection of a Halo smart lock):
- Check that your router broadcasts 2.4 GHz and the network isn’t hidden.
- Check that it’s password protected with WPA2 (Halo Select also supports WPA3).
- If the lock can’t see any networks during setup, power cycle it by removing and replacing the battery pack, then continue.
- Make sure there is good Wi-Fi signal at the lock. If not, Kwikset recommends an extender or repeater placed between the router and the lock.
- Turn the router and modem off and on again.
New network on Halo Select: in the Kwikset app, open Lock Settings, then Wi-Fi Settings, review the requirements and tap Continue. The lock stays reachable over Bluetooth while it scans. Pick your network and finish setup. If it can’t join, it goes back to the previous network after 15 minutes (Kwikset: Troubleshoot the Wi-Fi connection of a Halo smart lock).
Kwikset Halo, Halo Touch and Aura: network reset
On Halo models other than Halo Select, a changed network name or password needs a network reset. It deletes all Bluetooth pairings, Wi-Fi settings and user associations from the lock (Kwikset: Network reset).
- Press and hold “A” for 10 seconds. After 3 seconds you’ll hear a beep and see a blue light; keep holding until a beep and an amber light, then release.
- While the light blinks amber, press and release the Program button within 10 seconds.
- One long beep and a green light means success. Five rapid beeps and a blinking red light means start again.
- Remove the battery pack, wait 5 seconds and reinsert it.
- In the Kwikset app, go to Home Settings, Manage Home Locks, and remove the lock. Note the last four digits first.
- Forget the lock in your phone’s Bluetooth list (it ends in those four digits), then add it again from the app with “+”, Add a Lock.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my Schlage lock say Unreachable?
It has lost its connection to the Schlage cloud, usually because of no internet, an offline router or extender, slow internet, or weak Wi-Fi at the lock.
What Wi-Fi password rules does a Schlage Encode need?
24 characters or fewer, no spaces, and no $ or & characters. Otherwise pairing fails with a commissioning error.
Which Wi-Fi band do these locks use?
Kwikset says Halo locks need a 2.4 GHz network that isn’t hidden, and Schlage lists 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for Sense Pro. Keep your router’s 2.4 GHz band turned on.
How do I soft reset a Schlage Encode?
Retract the bolt, remove the battery tray for 10 seconds, reinsert it, extend and retract the bolt, then log out of and back into the app.
Why won’t my Kwikset Halo connect to Wi-Fi?
Check that the network is 2.4 GHz, not hidden and uses WPA2 (or WPA3 on Halo Select), that the signal at the lock is good, and restart the router and modem.
How do I change the Wi-Fi network on a Kwikset Halo?
Halo Select: Lock Settings, Wi-Fi Settings in the Kwikset app. Other Halo models: do a network reset and set the lock up again.
What does a Kwikset network reset delete?
All Bluetooth pairings, Wi-Fi network settings and user associations on the lock.
Do these locks still work when Wi-Fi is down?
Yes, you can still use the keypad or key. Schlage says Sense Pro also keeps Bluetooth app access and hands-free unlock during a power or Wi-Fi outage.
