Lutron Caséta Setup and Troubleshooting

Lutron Caséta is a little different from most smart home gear: the dimmers, switches and Pico remotes do not join your Wi-Fi at all. They talk to each other over Lutron’s own wireless link, and the Lutron Smart Hub (called the Smart Bridge on older boxes) is the one piece that connects to your home network, by Ethernet cable to your router. That makes setup simpler, but it also means “Wi-Fi problems” usually come down to the hub’s wired connection or to the app. This guide follows Lutron’s own quick-start and advanced installation guides for setup, pairing, flicker and resets.

How Caséta connects

Because the hub is wired, a weak Wi-Fi signal in another room does not stop your dimmers talking to the hub. What matters is that the hub stays powered and plugged into the router, and that your phone can reach your home network.

How to set up the Smart Hub

Lutron’s quick-start steps (Lutron: Smart Hub quick-start guide, Lutron: Caséta dimmer, Pico and Smart Hub kit guide):

  1. Connect the Smart Hub to your Wi-Fi router using the included Ethernet cable.
  2. Connect the power cord to the hub and plug it into an outlet.
  3. Download the Lutron app (search for “Lutron Caseta”) and walk through setup.

The hub is for indoor use only, and Lutron lists a range of 32 to 104 °F (0 to 40 °C) for it (Lutron: Caséta dimmer, Pico and Smart Hub kit guide).

If your router has no free Ethernet port, or sits somewhere awkward, our guides to mesh Wi-Fi vs a single router and putting smart home devices on their own network cover the common layouts. Keep the hub on the same network as your phone during setup.

Installing a Caséta dimmer safely

Lutron’s kit guide starts with a warning: turn power off at the circuit breaker or fuse before you install, because a shock can cause serious injury or death (Lutron: Caséta dimmer, Pico and Smart Hub kit guide). Lutron asks you to watch its installation video at casetawireless.com/support first. The single-switch steps, in short:

  1. Turn power off at the breaker and remove the old switch.
  2. Connect the ground wire, then the two remaining wall-box wires to the dimmer’s wires using the supplied connectors (the kit guide shows which go where for your model).
  3. Mount the dimmer, attach the wallplate and turn the power back on.

If two or more switches control the same light, Lutron points you to its 3-way instructions at casetawireless.com/3way rather than the single-switch steps (Lutron: Caséta dimmer, Pico and Smart Hub kit guide). Wire colors in your wall may not match the diagrams, so if anything looks different, stop and call a licensed electrician.

Putting several dimmers side by side in one wall box (ganging) lowers the maximum incandescent and halogen wattage each can handle; Lutron’s chart in the kit guide lists the limits (Lutron: Caséta dimmer, Pico and Smart Hub kit guide).

Pairing a Pico remote with a dimmer

Lutron’s steps for pairing directly, without the app (Lutron: Caséta dimmer, Pico and Smart Hub kit guide, Lutron’s Caséta Advanced Installation Guide (P/N 0301710)):

  1. Press and hold the “Off” button on the dimmer for about 6 seconds, until its LEDs start blinking.
  2. Press and hold the “Off” button on the Pico remote for about 6 seconds, until the lights flash three times.
  3. Repeat for any other Pico remotes.

You can also pair the Pico to a dimmer from the Lutron app once the hub is set up (Lutron: Caséta dimmer, Pico and Smart Hub kit guide).

Fixing LED flicker with low-end trim

Dimmable LED bulbs vary in how well they dim. If yours flicker, flash or turn off near the bottom of the range, Lutron’s Advanced Installation Guide has a low-end trim procedure for each dimmer model, including the original in-wall dimmer (PD-6WCL) and the Diva smart dimmer (DVRF-6L) (Lutron’s Caséta Advanced Installation Guide (P/N 0301710)). In outline, you hold buttons on the dimmer until its status LED starts flashing, adjust the light level until the flicker stops, then save. A matching high-end trim procedure sets the maximum brightness.

If you want lights that dim without a hub at all, our smart lighting starter kits guide compares bulb-based options.

How to reset a Caséta dimmer

Lutron’s Advanced Installation Guide gives a factory reset for the in-wall dimmers (PD-6WCL and related models) (Lutron’s Caséta Advanced Installation Guide (P/N 0301710)):

  1. Tap the “On” button quickly three times, and hold it on the third press.
  2. Keep holding until the light starts flashing quickly (about 3 seconds).
  3. Release, then immediately tap the button three more times.
  4. The light flashes slowly three times and turns off. Paired Pico remotes are removed and settings return to factory defaults, including high-end and low-end trim.

Diva smart dimmers and Claro switches have their own versions of this procedure in the same guide. After a reset, add the dimmer back to the hub in the Lutron app.

Frequently asked questions

Does Lutron Caséta need Wi-Fi?

The dimmers and Pico remotes don’t use Wi-Fi. The Smart Hub connects to your router with an Ethernet cable, and the Lutron app on your phone talks to it through your home network.

Can the Caséta Smart Hub connect over Wi-Fi?

Lutron’s setup steps connect the hub to your router with the included Ethernet cable; there is no Wi-Fi setup step in its quick-start guide.

Why won’t my Pico remote control the light?

Lutron lists four causes: the Pico isn’t paired, the dimmer is already at that level, the Pico is more than 30 ft (9 m) away, or the battery is low or inserted wrongly.

How do I pair a Pico remote without the app?

Hold “Off” on the dimmer for about 6 seconds until its LEDs blink, then hold “Off” on the Pico for about 6 seconds until the lights flash three times.

Why do my LED bulbs flicker on a Caséta dimmer?

Check that the bulbs are marked dimmable, then use Lutron’s low-end trim procedure to raise the lowest level. Lutron also keeps a list of compatible LEDs.

What does the FASS switch do?

It’s the Front Accessible Service Switch. Pulling it out cuts power to the light so you can change bulbs; pushing it back in restores power and can reset a dimmer after over-temperature protection.

How do I factory reset a Caséta dimmer?

On the in-wall dimmer, triple-tap “On” and hold until the light flashes quickly, release, then triple-tap again. The light flashes three times and turns off, and paired Picos and trim settings are cleared.

Is Caséta safe to install myself?

Lutron’s guide says to turn power off at the breaker first. If your wiring doesn’t match the diagrams or more than one switch controls the light, follow Lutron’s 3-way instructions or use a licensed electrician.
