NETGEAR Orbi Setup and Troubleshooting
An Orbi system is a router plus one or more satellites, and almost every Orbi problem shows up first as a light color: magenta on the router, magenta or amber on a satellite, or a pulsing power light. This guide explains what each light means, how to sync a satellite, how to fix a router that has no internet, how to wire satellites with Ethernet backhaul and how to get stubborn smart-home devices online, following NETGEAR’s own support pages.

Quick answers
- Router ring solid magenta means no internet; start with the modem (NETGEAR: What do the LEDs on my Orbi mean?).
- Satellite solid magenta means no backhaul link to the router or no IP address; move it closer and re-sync (NETGEAR: What do the LEDs on my Orbi mean?).
- Sync: press Sync on the router, then on each satellite within two minutes (NETGEAR: How do I sync my Orbi router and satellite?).
- Amber after sync means a fair link; move the satellite closer (NETGEAR: Where should I place my Orbi?).
- Smart device will not join? Use the Orbi IoT network set to 2.4 GHz only, where your model has one (NETGEAR: Change the IoT WiFi band on Orbi WiFi 6E).
What the Orbi lights mean
NETGEAR’s light chart for Orbi routers and satellites (NETGEAR: What do the LEDs on my Orbi mean?):
| Light | Color | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Power (router and satellite) | Solid green | Powered on |
| Power | Solid amber | Rebooting |
| Power | Pulsing amber | Factory reset or firmware update in progress |
| Power | Pulsing red | Needs attention; contact NETGEAR support |
| Router ring | Solid white | Ready to set up |
| Router ring | Pulsing white | Starting up, or WPS in progress |
| Router ring | Solid magenta | No internet connection |
| Router ring | Off | Connected to the internet |
| Satellite ring | Pulsing white | Starting up or trying to reach the router |
| Satellite ring | Solid magenta | No backhaul link to the router, or no IP address |
| Satellite ring | Blue for about 3 minutes | Good link to the router |
| Satellite ring | Amber for about 3 minutes | Fair link to the router |
| Satellite ring | Off | Connected to the router |
Light locations differ by model; outdoor satellites, for example, use a bottom light (NETGEAR: How do I sync my Orbi router and satellite?).
Set up a new Orbi
NETGEAR’s app setup, in short (NETGEAR: Set up an Orbi WiFi System):
- Install the Orbi app, sign in to a NETGEAR account and tap Set up an Orbi, then scan the QR code on the router.
- Unplug the modem and any old router. Connect the Orbi router to the modem with the yellow Ethernet cable, using the yellow port on the router.
- Power on the modem and the Orbi router, but not the satellites yet. Wait for the modem lights to settle and the Orbi ring to turn solid white (up to 5 minutes).
- Join the default Wi-Fi name printed on the router, then create your own network name, Wi-Fi password and a separate admin password.
- Plug in each satellite about 3 to 4 rooms away from the router or another satellite.
You can also set up from a web browser at orbilogin.com using the default network printed on the router label (NETGEAR: Set up an Orbi WiFi System).
Sync a satellite (magenta or amber satellite)
- Make sure the router and satellite both have power.
- Press Sync on the router.
- Within two minutes, press Sync on the satellite.
NETGEAR says that after you press Sync, blue for 90 to 180 seconds means success, magenta for that long means the sync failed, and amber means you should place the two closer together (NETGEAR: How do I sync my Orbi router and satellite?).
For placement, NETGEAR suggests table height, out of cabinets and away from fish tanks, metal shelves, microwaves and other wireless devices (NETGEAR: Where should I place my Orbi?). A practical approach is to sync the satellite in the same room as the router first, then move it outward until the light shows blue after a restart.
Router magenta: fix no internet
NETGEAR’s order of checks (NETGEAR: What should I do if my network is offline?, NETGEAR: Power cycle your Orbi network):
- Power cycle the whole network. Turn off and unplug the modem, then the Orbi router and satellites. Turn the modem back on and let it finish starting, then plug in the Orbi devices. They take about two minutes to restart.
- Test the modem alone. Plug a computer straight into the modem with Ethernet. If that has no internet, the problem is the provider or the line; contact your internet provider.
- If the modem works, reconnect the Orbi to it with the yellow cable in the yellow port, power cycle again, then log in to the router to check its internet settings.
Ethernet backhaul (wired satellites)
Where a cable can reach, a wired link between router and satellite avoids the wireless hop entirely. NETGEAR says to update firmware on every Orbi device first, then connect satellites to the router directly (star), one after another (daisy chain), or through an Ethernet switch (NETGEAR: Ethernet backhaul on Orbi). The switch ports should be 1 Gbps or faster (NETGEAR: Ethernet backhaul on Orbi).
If the system does not detect the wired link after a firmware update or the first time you connect a cable, NETGEAR says to reboot the router and wait up to 5 minutes; the Attached Devices list shows the backhaul status (NETGEAR: Ethernet backhaul not detected). You can also use Orbi Ethernet ports for TVs, consoles and computers (NETGEAR: Orbi Ethernet ports).
Smart-home devices that will not connect
Many plugs, cameras and bulbs only use 2.4 GHz. NETGEAR says most Orbi systems do not let you split the main network into separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names; the Orbi decides which band each device uses (NETGEAR: Separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks on Orbi?).
Newer models have a separate IoT network instead. On Orbi WiFi 6E systems it is on 2.4 and 5 GHz by default; log in at orbilogin.com, open Wireless, and in Wireless IoT Settings choose 2.4GHz only if smart devices have trouble joining (NETGEAR: Change the IoT WiFi band on Orbi WiFi 6E).
On Orbi WiFi 7 systems, the main network uses WPA2 + WPA3 by default, which some printers, smart devices and older devices cannot join. NETGEAR’s fix is to enable the IoT network under BASIC > Wireless, pick its bands, give it a name and use WPA2-PSK [AES] (NETGEAR: Connecting devices to a NETGEAR WiFi 7 network). Our IoT network guide covers the same idea on other brands.
Factory reset (last resort)
A reset erases your network name, password and other settings. Press and hold the Reset button with a paper clip until the Power light blinks amber (on a wall-plug satellite, the ring light blinks amber), then set the system up again in the app or a browser. NETGEAR notes that Armor or Smart Parental Controls subscriptions must be reactivated in the Orbi app afterward (NETGEAR: Reset an Orbi to factory settings).

Frequently asked questions
Why is my Orbi router light magenta?
NETGEAR says a solid magenta router ring means no internet. Power cycle the modem and Orbi in order, test the modem with a computer plugged straight in, and contact your provider if the modem has no internet.
Why is my Orbi satellite light magenta?
It has no backhaul link to the router or no IP address. Move it closer, press Sync on the router and then on the satellite within two minutes.
What does amber mean on an Orbi satellite?
After syncing, amber for about three minutes means a fair link to the router. NETGEAR suggests moving the satellite closer.
How do I sync an Orbi satellite?
Press Sync on the router, then press Sync on the satellite within two minutes. Blue for 90 to 180 seconds means success.
Can I split 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz on Orbi?
NETGEAR says most Orbi systems do not support separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names on the main network. Newer models have an IoT network you can set to 2.4 GHz only.
Why won't my smart plug connect to my Orbi WiFi 7?
NETGEAR says some smart devices cannot join the default WPA2 + WPA3 network. Enable the IoT network with WPA2-PSK [AES] and, if needed, 2.4 GHz only.
Can I wire Orbi satellites with Ethernet?
Yes. Update firmware first, then connect satellites to the router directly, in a chain or through a switch with 1 Gbps or faster ports. Reboot the router if the wired link is not detected.
How do I factory reset an Orbi?
Hold the Reset button with a paper clip until the Power light blinks amber, then set it up again. This erases your network name and password.
