ecobee Thermostat Setup and Wi-Fi Fixes

An ecobee thermostat needs two things to work well: steady 24V power from your heating and cooling system, and a Wi-Fi connection the thermostat can use. Many “Wi-Fi” problems are really power problems, and many power problems come down to the C wire. This guide covers Wi-Fi setup and drops, a blank or rebooting screen, the Power Extender Kit and SmartSensor pairing, following ecobee’s own support pages.

Quick answers

Connect your ecobee to Wi-Fi

ecobee’s steps on the thermostat (ecobee: Wi-Fi FAQ, setup guide and troubleshooting):

  1. Open Main Menu > General > Settings > Wi-Fi. On Lite and Essential the path is Main Menu > Settings > WiFi (ecobee: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi connectivity).
  2. Make sure Wi-Fi Radio is enabled, then tap Network.
  3. Choose Select Wi-Fi Network. On an iPhone you can choose Connect with HomeKit instead.
  4. Pick your 2.4 GHz network (or 5 GHz on a model that supports it), tap Next and enter the password.
  5. Tap Connect, then OK.

For the HomeKit route, ecobee says to open iOS Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the ecobee serial number that appears and use the 8-digit HomeKit code shown on the thermostat (ecobee: Wi-Fi FAQ, setup guide and troubleshooting).

ecobee says the thermostat uses WPA/WPA2-AES; TKIP is not supported. It opens an outgoing secure (TLS) connection to ecobee, and no incoming connections are allowed (ecobee: Wi-Fi FAQ, setup guide and troubleshooting, ecobee: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi connectivity).

Fix an ecobee that will not connect

ecobee’s checklist (ecobee: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi connectivity):

  1. Rule out power. If the screen is blank, skip to the power section below.
  2. Restart the network. Reboot the router and any extenders.
  3. Restart the thermostat. Pull it straight off the wall plate, wait 30 seconds and push it back on.
  4. Reconnect from the Wi-Fi menu and note any error message and where it appears in the countdown.
  5. Test with a phone hotspot. On an iPhone, remove special characters from the phone name and turn on Maximize Compatibility. If the thermostat connects to the hotspot, the problem is on your home network.

Fix an ecobee that keeps dropping off Wi-Fi

If the thermostat connects but goes offline often, ecobee suggests (ecobee: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi connectivity):

Our IoT network guide shows how to set up a separate 2.4 GHz network on common routers and mesh systems.

What still works without Wi-Fi

ecobee says the thermostat keeps working as a basic thermostat without Wi-Fi. You lose registration and the app, weather data (which heat-pump compressor protection relies on), Home IQ and System Monitor, and HomeKit and Alexa control. Pairing SmartSensors also needs the app and thermostat on the same Wi-Fi (ecobee: Wi-Fi FAQ, setup guide and troubleshooting).

Fix an ecobee that will not turn on

ecobee notes that the thermostat has no internal power; it runs on 24V from your system. For a new install, its checks are (ecobee: Thermostat won’t turn on):

If it was working before and went blank, ecobee points to safety switches: on heating, the high-limit switch and a clogged furnace filter; on cooling, the condensate drain, drip pan and float switch (ecobee: Thermostat won’t turn on).

Why an ecobee keeps rebooting

ecobee lists three main causes: interruptions to the 24VAC supply, a safety switch (high-limit or float switch) cutting power, and a transformer that cannot supply enough power (VA) for the system. Gaps in System Monitor data are a sign of power loss (ecobee: Why is my ecobee rebooting?).

Install the Power Extender Kit (no C wire)

The Power Extender Kit (PEK) goes at your furnace or air-handler control board and creates a C wire from four existing wires by combining the Y and G functions. ecobee says it is not compatible with dual-transformer or heat-only systems, and that Lite and Essential do not include it (ecobee: Installing with the Power Extender Kit).

  1. Turn off power to the HVAC equipment. Photograph the wires at the old thermostat, the control board and any splices.
  2. At the board, move the four thermostat wires (R, G, Y, W) into the matching terminals on the PEK.
  3. Connect the PEK’s five labeled wires to the matching terminals on the board. Leave the separate outdoor-unit wires on C and Y in place; your air conditioner needs them.
  4. If wire colors differ between the thermostat and the board, there is a splice; install the PEK at the splice instead.
  5. Wire the thermostat as shown below, mount it and restore power.

The Essential column comes from ecobee’s power troubleshooting article (ecobee: Thermostat won’t turn on). ecobee’s app has diagrams for every model; if you have a spare wire at the thermostat, you may be able to use it as C instead of a PEK (ecobee: Installing with the Power Extender Kit).

Pair or fix a SmartSensor

ecobee’s SmartSensor steps (ecobee: SmartSensor troubleshooting):

  1. Cancel any hold on the thermostat.
  2. Take the battery out and put it back in with the + side facing down.
  3. Restart the thermostat by removing it from the wall plate for about 2 minutes.
  4. Start pairing in the ecobee app and scan the QR code. A backup code is inside the battery compartment.
  5. Put the battery back with the + side up.

Do not mount the sensor until it is paired. It uses a CR2477 3V battery that ecobee says lasts up to 5 years (ecobee: SmartSensor troubleshooting).
