SimpliSafe Setup and Wi-Fi Troubleshooting

A SimpliSafe system has two kinds of Wi-Fi devices: the Base Station, which uses Wi-Fi as an extra connection to the monitoring center and for firmware updates, and the cameras, which need Wi-Fi to stream. Almost every connection problem comes down to the same few router settings, chiefly 2.4 GHz. This guide follows SimpliSafe’s own support articles for getting both online and keeping cameras connected.

Quick answers

Router settings SimpliSafe needs

SimpliSafe’s requirements for the Base Station and cameras (SimpliSafe: System and Wi-Fi requirements, SimpliSafe: Why does my camera keep losing its Wi-Fi connection?):

SettingWhat SimpliSafe says
Band2.4 GHz must be broadcasting. Only the Video Doorbell Series 2 can also use 5 GHz.
PasswordThe network must have one. Open networks and networks with a login page aren’t supported.
SecurityWPA2, WPA3 or WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode. WPA-only networks aren’t compatible.
Name and password length31 characters or fewer, each.
Special charactersCameras can’t join networks whose name or password contains a semicolon or backslash.
VisibilityThe network name must be broadcast, not hidden.
Channel1, 6 or 11 recommended to reduce interference.
Upload speed (cameras)2 Mbps per camera at 1080p, 1.5 Mbps at 720p, 1 Mbps at 480p.

SimpliSafe recommends keeping the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks separate rather than merged under one name. Many routers and internet providers combine them by default, so check your router’s app or manual, or ask your provider (SimpliSafe: Can’t connect Base Station to Wi-Fi during setup).

Connect the Base Station to Wi-Fi

In the SimpliSafe app (SimpliSafe: How to connect a SimpliSafe system to Wi-Fi):

  1. Open My System, then Base Station Settings.
  2. Tap Wi-Fi Network and wait for the scan.
  3. Choose your network, enter the password and tap Connect.

On the Keypad: press Menu, enter your Master PIN, open System Settings, then Wi-Fi. Pick your network and enter the password; the Keypad shows the result.

If your phone is on a 5 GHz network and a separate 2.4 GHz network is available, switch the phone to 2.4 GHz in its Wi-Fi settings before trying again (SimpliSafe: Can’t connect Base Station to Wi-Fi during setup).

What the Wi-Fi error messages mean

MessageLikely causeWhat to do
Wi-Fi Network Password IncorrectTypo or wrong case, unsupported character, name or password over 31 characters, or a WPA-only routerRe-enter carefully, shorten if needed, and set the router to WPA2, WPA3 or mixed mode.
Wi-Fi Network Not FoundNetwork down, 5 GHz only, or hidden network nameCheck other devices can connect, create a 2.4 GHz network, and unhide the network name.

Reset the Base Station

SimpliSafe’s reset steps for a new Base Station (SimpliSafe: Can’t connect Base Station to Wi-Fi during setup). You’ll need a Phillips head screwdriver.

  1. Unplug the power cable from the bottom of the Base Station.
  2. Remove the screw on the bottom and take off the cover to reach the batteries.
  3. Take out one battery, wait 60 seconds, and put it back.
  4. Plug the Base Station back in.
  5. Wait for it to say “Welcome to SimpliSafe,” then try Wi-Fi again.

If it still won’t connect, SimpliSafe’s support team is the next step.

Cameras that lose Wi-Fi

SimpliSafe says cameras usually drop because they’re too far from the router or don’t have enough bandwidth (SimpliSafe: Why does my camera keep losing its Wi-Fi connection?). To check, open the app’s Cameras tab, tap the gear icon, choose the camera and run Connection Check.

Other fixes SimpliSafe suggests (SimpliSafe: How to improve Wi-Fi signal strength):

Setting up an extender for SimpliSafe

SimpliSafe sells a TP-Link extender and says any other extender should let you (SimpliSafe: How to improve Wi-Fi signal strength, SimpliSafe: TP-Link Wi-Fi extender installation guide):

SimpliSafe’s configuration rules (SimpliSafe: Wi-Fi extender instructions):

  1. Name the extended network something like “MyHome_EXT” so the camera joins the extender, not the distant router.
  2. Turn off the extender’s 5 GHz network, or name it differently, for example “MyHome_EXT5G.”
  3. With more than one extender, give each its own name, such as “MyHome_EXT1” and “MyHome_EXT2.”
  4. Move only the devices with Wi-Fi problems to the extender network. The Base Station doesn’t need to move.

On placement, SimpliSafe notes that closer isn’t always better: a spot with fewer walls and obstructions between router, extender and camera often works best, so try a few positions. During TP-Link setup it suggests starting within 16 feet of the router and turning off mobile data or VPNs (SimpliSafe: TP-Link Wi-Fi extender installation guide).

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t my SimpliSafe Base Station connect to Wi-Fi?

The usual causes are a 5 GHz-only or hidden network, a name or password over 31 characters, a WPA-only router, or a mistyped password. SimpliSafe needs a visible 2.4 GHz network with WPA2, WPA3 or mixed mode security.

Does SimpliSafe work with 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

No for the Base Station and most cameras. SimpliSafe says only the Video Doorbell Series 2 can connect to 5 GHz.

Should I split my 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks?

SimpliSafe recommends separate network names. If your router combines them, check its app or manual, or ask your internet provider.

How do I reset a SimpliSafe Base Station?

Unplug it, open the battery cover with a Phillips screwdriver, remove one battery for 60 seconds, reinsert it and plug it back in. Wait for “Welcome to SimpliSafe” before trying Wi-Fi again.

What does “Wi-Fi Connected but Unable to Reach SimpliSafe” mean?

The Base Station joined your Wi-Fi, but the network itself has no internet access. SimpliSafe says to contact your internet provider.

What Wi-Fi signal does a SimpliSafe camera need?

SimpliSafe says signal strength should be above -55 dBm and upload speed above 2 Mbps. Run Connection Check in the app to see both.

Can I use any Wi-Fi extender with SimpliSafe?

SimpliSafe says it should let you give the extended network a different name and broadcast 2.4 GHz with 5 GHz turned off or separately named.

Do all SimpliSafe devices need to be on the extender network?

No. SimpliSafe says to move only the devices with Wi-Fi problems; the Base Station can stay on the main network.
